Chapter 34

When Bill came into view, Frank just waved anonymously along with the others. Then a voice very near Frank called out.

“Hey, Bill! Remember me? I miss you! Call me!” It was Dennis. Bill looked in that direction and his smile faltered. He recovered, waved in Dennis’ direction, and walked on.

Frank turned to where Dennis was standing with Jim and a group of guys. What’s your game, Stahlworth? Frank thought.

Frank turned his attention back to the procession of athletes passing by. Bill was now directly in front of Frank. He looked in his direction. Frank waved and called his name along with the others. There was no sign of recognition on the handsome, smiling face. Had he seen Frank? If he had, Bill’s reaction was no different than it was to the multitude of well-wishers who had come to welcome Bill and the team home. Frank was just one of hundreds of fans, just a face in the crowd, and not the man who, just the week before, Bill had made love to and proclaimed his love for.14
