Chapter 17: Reunions and Revelations

Queen Jane's world crumbled around her as she learned that her kingdom had been attacked and the castle overtaken, she screamed and collapsed against her husband, King Everett. He swept her up in his arms, shielding her from the cold marble floor as they hastened to their chambers. Guards and maids scurried out of sight, intimidated by the king's fierce reputation, but Jane knew him as a loving and tender partner, prioritizing her happiness above all else.

Enraged by the news, King Everett summoned the royal doctors to attend to Jane, who remained unconscious for four hours. As she received treatment, King Everett dispatched spies to survey the remains of Valtoria, determined to learn if any of Jane's siblings had survived.

Meanwhile, Amber was consumed by grief, spending the day in tears and refusing to eat or drink. Her husband, King Ryker, rushed back from his business trip upon hearing of her distress, delegating his duties to a trusted noble. Immediately upon arriving, he went straight to his chambers and knocked on the door. But there was no response. He heard her crying, then opened the door. As soon as she saw him, Amber stood up and started walking closer to him. King Ryker, already knowing what she wanted, opened his arms and gave her a warm embrace.

As King Ryker embraced Amber, she found solace in his warm hug. "We'll reclaim your kingdom," he comforted her. Amber asked, her voice muffled against his chest, "How? With all the royals slain, who would be the heir?" Tears streamed down her face as she clung to him. King Ryker replied, "Richard would be." Amber's disbelief was evident, but King Ryker assured her, "He's here in the palace." Overjoyed, Amber exclaimed, "Take me to my brother!" King Ryker agreed, "But first, freshen up. He's in the visitors' quarters, bathing and receiving new clothes. He's not alone, but we'll reunite you soon."

As Amber prepared herself, her heart swelled with excitement. She donned an elegant blue silk gown, her husband watching with a smile. As she finished dressing, she blushed, and King Ryker wondered at her enduring shyness. Together, they set out to reunite with Richard, the palace maids whispering about the queen's sudden happiness and speculating about the king's role in lifting her spirits.
