"Hurry up and eat. What are you doing?" Savanna looked at the two children lovingly and reached out to rub Mandel's head.
Soft hair went through Savanna's fingers, and as the hair parted, a feeling of reluctance gathered up in Savanna.
"Savanna, did Tyrell call? Is Tyrell coming to pick me up?"
Mandel realized that he was going to leave, and his eyes suddenly turned red. The bread in his hand that Mandel loved the most instantly became not plain.
"Yes," Savanna nodded and said honestly, "Tyrell will come to pick you up in an hour."
In an instant, tears filled Mandel's eyes.
Pretending nothing had happened, Mandel lowered his head and took a bite of the bread.
Bean-sized tears rolled down from Mandel's face, dripping onto the bread slices. They mixed with sour tomato sauce, and the bread tasted sour and astringent.
