Chapter Five

I strolled through the hallway heading towards the bottom main entrance of the hospital. Outside there were huge but simply built tents to occupy new patients that were getting covid tests done. These tents also held many new hospital beds for patients that have tested positive for the virus because there was not enough room inside the hospital.

" Wait up Stewart " - Dr Adam shouted from across the hallway while running and trying to catch up with me.

I waited until he reached me and continued walking.

'' I'm sorry about last night, I wasn't thinking " he softly said in an unsteady and guilty voice.

How was he so caring and gentle yet so violent and rough some times. He reminds me much of the hulk with his split personality.

"No, I'm sorry for putting you in that situation. I didn't even think to check Ethan's test results again. Instead I snatched the ventilator from your patient who desperately needed it " - I said

" His alright, his stable. But hmm ...

We good ? '' - he urgently asked

I look over at him and nod

" yeah , we're good " - I warm and clearly reply

" Good enough to meet him at the lab in ten minutes ? " - he smirked

" you wanna do it in the lab? " - I high pitched blurted out in shock

" wait, what? No " - he chuckled

" I have some tests to run, thought you could help" - he continued

" oh, I totally read that wrong " - I shyly replied

" not everything I do, is to get you naked " - he leaned his body to the left as he whispered to me

" yeah, most times it's to get one the new nurses or interns naked " -i replied in a low but quite audible tone and had rolled my eyes

" do I sense a hint of jealousy? " - he asked with a cheeky smirk across his face

" You're good for sex but I have nothing to be jealous off " - I shrugged

" So, if I were to say that we need to STOP... because I've decided to commit to one of those nurses or interns, how would you feel ? " - he questioned and suddenly stopped in the middle of the hallway

" The words commit and Dr James Adam in One sentence... that doesn't sound correct " - I annoyingly teased

" you'd miss me " - he confidently replied

" I'd miss him, not you " - I rolled my eyes and indirectly glanced down at the bulge below his belt.

~~ At the lab ~~

I switched the row of centrifuges on and carefully carried two racks of test tubes to Dr Adam.

After washing my hands, I put on a new pair of nitrate gloves and grabbed whatever equipment that I needed to help Dr Adam run a few test samples on the blood. I took a dropper, Anti D , known and unknown blood samples from the front desk to perform one of the simplest tests. The Haemagglutinaton test !

" May I ask the reason we are wasting our time on immunology? " - I replied in a squeaky and annoying tone of voice

" Why? Do you have somewhere else to be ? " - he deep and tonelessly replied

" Can't you get one of the interns to help with this ? I was scheduled to be at the covid ward now and this doesn't seem important"- I continued

" I'm preparing all this to test the skills of the first-year residents. It's their first time here and they should have been training, watching and studying us doctors operate on patients. We were meant to teach them how to be like us and that's what they came prepared for. Instead they walked into a global pandemic, they live at the hospital, they aren't allowed to even stand beside us and most of them struggle with how to properly put on their protective wear. " - he said

" Like you said there's a global pandemic happening right now, so what are you doing wasting your time teaching these student's how to test for agglutination and determine blood types ? " - I asked him annoyed and began to sanitise the desk that I had placed my test tubes on.

" They came here with the intention to operate on patients in the next five years. Not to be thrown in the deep end, not knowing what to do and feel threatened because of a pandemic. And I don't expect for them to lose any time or be forced to wait when they have the ability to be great surgeon's " Dr Adam explained

" hmm who is it? Come on ... tell me ? Which one of these interns are you trying to impress? " - I began to purposely annoy him

" you know, remove that dramatised sex craving monster that you make me out to be... I'm a brilliant surgeon" - he confidently replied

" with a monstrous ego" - I complained

'' I worked damn hard to be where I am today, to have the authority here at this hospital and the ability to stick my hand through someone's chest and make their heart work the way it supposed too. Damn right, I'll be proud of that " - he bragged

" you're a good teacher though, i say that as your favourite student but we both know you're doing this for someone " - I chuckled

" my favourite student? looks like someone else is being very egotistical " - he laughs

A group of students walk into the lab and line themselves at the desks. There was majority of women in this group of interns, just as I would have expected. One of the students walked passed me and found a space at an empty desk, she ran because she had walked in late.

" You " - I sternly called and pointed at her

' yes... me " - she stuttered

" Firstly where's your gloves? That's the first thing you were supposed to put on when working in the haematology lab and working with blood" - I said

" I'm sorry Dr stewart " - she said and ran to get her gloves

" Secondly, you're running in a lab ... Forget agglutination tests, would you like me to teach you the rules of the lab " - I sternly continued

" no, Dr stewart, I'm, I'm sorry " - she continued to stutter

" Stewart, Thank you " - Dr Adam said with a little cheeky smile and glanced in my direction. !

" Anytime Dr Adam" - I smirked and walked out the lab .
