“Enjoying the evening,” he said, shifting and sliding until he finally found his footing. He leaned into me, wrapping an arm over my shoulder. “One other thing you don’t know about me,” he said.

“You’re clumsy,” I answered.

“Besides that, I’m quite agile.”

“You could’ve fooled me,” I said, grinning, my hand landing unexpectedly across his chest.

I tried to pull it away, but he held it in place. I looked around at the excited faces of other people, adults and children, filling up the carousel.

When the merry-go-round started moving, Devon said, “Change of pace will do us both good.”

“Thanks for listening to me back there,” I said.

Devon turned to me, curious. “What did I do?”

“Listened.”

He reached for my arm and intertwined his thick fingers through mine. “Not sure I can take credit for all of it.”

“You didn’t judge me. You didn’t force the conversation about my father. I respect that.”

“It’s not my place. But if you feel like talking, I’m here to listen.”
