Chapter 14

Sweat pooled under my arms as I waited out the last five minutes. I wiped perspiration from my forehead. I could smell myself. I needed a shower.

After a few more mutterings between the two guys, I noticed Devon hand Pete back his keys.

Devon joined me at my car, and we waved goodbye to Pete, watching his truck crawl out of the parking lot, weaving in and out of the yellow lines.

“Is it safe for him to drive?” I asked.

Devon nodded, his hand jammed into the pocket of his shorts. “He told me he’d take the back roads. I told him to call me when he got home.”

Two cars pulled into the parking lot as we stayed back, talking.

“What’s Pete’s story?” I asked.

Devon leaned up against my driver’s side door, crossed his arms, spread his legs. He exhaled and looked up at the night sky. “Pete is young and lost. He’s got a lot of growing up to do.”

“Does it have anything to do with Glenn?”

Devon was quiet.
