Little vile Maya

"Good morning, students. You're getting a new classmate today, so please behave yourselves."

From the hallway, Maya heard her new teacher talking to her future class, preparing for Maya's entrance. She had leaned against the wall and stared out at the sky through the enormous glass window, as this was by no means a novelty for her anymore.

The 16-year-old had changed schools 8 times in the last 2 years and ended up here at Sedaya High School. That's why she didn't care for the introduction part.

"Will you please come in, Maya?" called Mr Mayers through the closed door.

Maya took a deep breath and exhaled again. With her right hand, she pushed down the handle and opened the door in front of her. Without giving the class or Mr Mayers even a moment's attention, she stepped through the door and closed it again behind her. She enjoyed the curious glances of her classmates, who followed her path to the teacher.

'That's right. Let all your gazes fall on me!'

This moment of coming to a new class was like a thrill. One of the few there had been in her life so far. Stopping in front of Mr Mayers, she now turned to the class for the first time, over which she just let a casual glance pass. Who her classmates were did not interest her.

"This is Maya Endrejs. She is your new classmate as of today and I want you to get along well, understand?"

"Yes, Mr Mayers," the class replied.

"Good," he said, turning to Maya, "Would you like to introduce yourself to the class, Maya?"

Silently, she looked at Mr Mayers before looking back at the class.

"My name is Maya. I'm 16 years old, and this is my eighth school in 2 years." She said.

It was the last part that gave her the most sort of heady feeling. Her parents had made it clear to her that she should keep it to herself. But the looks from her classmates were always worth it. Curiosity was written all over their faces. Mr Mayers also seemed puzzled by this statement.

'So they didn't even tell the teachers....'

"I guess your parents move around a lot." speculated Mr Mayers. "Very well, please sit in an empty seat."

The class still had a few empty seats, so Maya had plenty to choose from. But where should she sit? She eyed the students around the vacant seats suspiciously when a hand rose in the air.

"Here, sit here!"

The call came from a girl. She wore her long, blond hair down to her chest. Her green eyes sparkled at Maya. She was one of the prettier girls in this class. Not that she was prettier than Maya herself, with her long, fiery red hair, her skin flawless except for a few freckles.

'I don't like how pretty she is.'

None of the girls here really seemed to be a threat. Nevertheless, there were a few good-looking ones here, and she didn't like that. Besides, good-humoured girls like the one who offered her the seat were always extremely popular.

With a grin on her face, Maya walked towards the vacant seat that was offered enthusiastically to her.

"I'm Maite," the blonde whispered excitedly as Maya sat down beside her. "Will you be my girlfriend?"

"I'd love to," Maya said, keeping her grin on her face. "I'm Maya."

Though she had already introduced herself to the class, for the sake of politeness, she did so again directly.

"Good. Now that it's settled, please open your books." said Mr Mayers.

"Hey, Maite?" whispered Maya.

"Yes?"

"Will you let me look out of your book, as a friend? I don't have one yet today."

"Yeah, no problem. Wait, I'll move over to you. "

No thanks came from Maya, but that didn't seem to bother Maite. That Maya didn't have a book with her was a lie, because all she wanted was for the looks that were usually Maite's to now be hers. As close as the two girls were sitting together, that could only happen.

The first hour almost flew by and ended with the loud ringing of the wall clock above the door.

"We're going to take a 15 minute break. Maite and Maya, will you both please wipe the board clean for the next lesson?"

"Yes," they both replied and nodded.

The other students headed for the door and gradually left the room, followed by the teacher. Only Maya and Maite stayed back in the class. While Maite had already walked to the blackboard, holding a sponge in her hand, Maya packed up her stuff, took one of the blackboard sponges and walked towards the door.

"Where are you going, Maya?"

"I just want to stretch my legs for a minute. Just finish the left half and I'll do the rest when I get back. But could you keep this to yourself? Like, as a good friend? "

"Yes..." replied Maite.

The answer came hesitantly, but that was enough for Maya. She opened the door for Maya and peeked out to see if anyone else was in the corridor. There was no one left in the entire corridor, so she left the classroom while Maite wiped the left half of the blackboard clean.

In the corridor, Maya heard some girls talking. Apparently, she was the topic of conversation among this group. She would have liked to join them immediately, but she had to wait a few more moments. Only after a few minutes had passed did she join the group. But before that, she had soiled her hands a little with the chalk dust of the blackboard sponge and thrown the sponge into a rubbish bin.

"Well, are you talking about me?"

Full of confidence, Maya stepped towards the open group, smiling at them. What exactly the classmates were talking about was unimportant for the first moment. All that mattered was where she would steer it.

"Oh Maya, you're done already? Where's Maite?" asked a girl in the group.

Three girls had gathered here to chat. The one Maya had approached had long brunette hair. It was sleek and beautiful to look at and her face was also flawlessly pure. Moreover, there was a lot of self-assurance in her voice.

Maya acknowledged her question with a shrug.

"I don't know. She said that as a new one, I could do the blackboard duty on my own on the first day, and she's out the door."

In front of the others, she presented her chalk-dusted hands, causing shock reactions in the others. Anyone who saw the girls' open mouths could tell.

"Maite said that? Our Maite?" the girl repeated.

Maya nodded and lowered her gaze to the floor.

"I was just cleaning the left half of the board, because I don't think it's fair to have to do her part."

"That's alright. As class president, I would like to apologise for Maite's behaviour. I will sort things out, I promise."

'Class president? Jackpot!'
