Chapter 10, Struggle

I listen to the clicking of a rifle then I open my eyes, the VC rifle kept clicking for her I'm not sure if it jammed or she's out of ammo.

I tackled her to the ground which she struggled I held held her mouth close to keep her from shouting then during the struggle I plunge my knife into her side.

Watching her eyes widen with tears of pain and maybe sadness I just grimaced and looked away her struggles ended and I took my knife back out.

I sat back panting lightly as I held my head, I've killed before but I've never killed a lady just the fact I killed a woman even tho she was trying to kill me felt different. Rubbing my eyes tiredly, never once did I think I would kill a woman.

Then I heard shouting which clearly wasn't English, squinting my eyes I noticed straw hats and some former clothing no military uniforms.

I took out my rifle firing which one of the straw hats dropped then I ran back as fast I could.

More shouting then I heard bullets whizzing pass me, I took out the whistle Gillian gave me then I blew into it.

Making a loud noise as I ran I kept blowing into it hoping my unit heard me then I felt someone grab me.

I was about to grab my revolver til it was Gillian who held me, he shushed me. We waited just as Charlie got closer one of the explosives went off.

Then Paul unleashed fury of bullets from his BAR. I fired with everyone else, the silhouettes returned fire which the flashes of their weapons gave us some illumination of them.

Gillian fired his rifle while I stood with him doing the same.

"Got two down!" Paul shouted.

Just as fast as it happened it ended, Gillian order us to regroup and return back to the boat. We ran back and reached the beach.

Once we got on, Scully and I pushed the boat into the water then we got onto it as it drove from the beach. Out of the corner of my eye I saw other boats making their way to the beach I sat back closing my eyes.

"Well done boys I am proud of each and every one of you" Gillian says I wasn't looking due to my eyes being closed but I could tell he was smiling.

Once we got back to land we were told to take a rest, I went to see Chau. Of course she waited for me, she hugged me which I carried her inside.

After our long moment of mixing our love, she stepped out for away while I wrote in my journal on the situation.

I was drinking while rubbing my eyes then I went up to go to the bathroom and wash my face. I splash some water on my then dry myself when I looked into the mirror I saw an NVA aiming his rifle at me.

I turn around to see nothing, my heart was racing so I ran to grab my revolver and checked every part of the room the closet, balcony even under the bed.

I could of sworn I saw a soldier I lower my guard and sat down and turn over to see a Viet Cong with a massive hole in eye staring me this made me back up off the bed as I fell.

Aiming my revolver which again there was nothing I rubbed my eyes begining to think I'm going insane then I heard the door clicking so I hide behind the door and someone walked in.

I rush the intruder and pin them to the wall I held their throat preparing to choke the life of out of them but in some form of English I heard "Please...Please..." I realize I was strangling Chau.

I let go of her as she begin coughing and gasping for air I back away from her looking at my hands. I never killed Chau, I ran to the bathroom where I proceeded to throw up in the toilet.

After a whole minute I felt hands on my back of course I didn't need to look I know it was Chau, She held me in her arms as I just curled up like a child.

I was muttering apologizes and oaths but she told me to hush as she held me to her chest.

Chau stayed with me til I calm down, I was sitting on the bed with Chau hugging me from behind as I held her hands. I loved her touch and I loved her the fact she stayed with me tells a lot on our relationship.

"Chau" I said her name she looked at me then I faced her holding her arms "Once my service is over I want you to come with me to the states, Chau I want you to marry me when this all done"

She said nothing I was hoping she would say something then she kissed me to which I held her as we went back onto the bed and made our love.

At 0600 Hours, I reported back to my unit as we gathered around with Gillian he walked in and sat down.

"Boys this is going to be literal hell we're going to do a prison break, MACVSOG is the only unit to do this however this isn't going to be easy the ones for this mission are Marshall, Scully, Bucky and Anthony"

"Anthony you'll be squad leader, the mission is rescue some of our boys the moment you step out of this tent you'll be talking to Charlie's cousins they'll bring you close to the Prison close as possible this mission is very covert you get in rescue the captured marines and you get out understood?" He said "Yes sir...Your not coming with?" I asked.

"Much as I would love to I'll be covering an armored Calvary with Paul and Kyle good luck son, you sons of bitches better come back to me in one piece or in a body bag" He says.

We saluted and left as me, Marshall, Scully and Bucky met with a small group of VC except they were friendly one of them spoke in English.

"We bring you to where they keep G.I you go and we go back to fighting" He says, once we got equipped we took a helicopter that flew us over the jungle.

I was looking down while I wiped sweat from my head, Bucky was taking a quick nap, Marshall chewed on a chocolate bar and Scully fiddled with a shotgun shell.

The Helicopter landed and we set out with the VC, they lead us through the jungle which I begin to ask why are they helping us.

The one leading turned to me said "I fight French back to make home free but I don't like Commie they burn my home down so better to work with G.I. then against" I couldn't argue that so we followed til they stopped.

"Over there is Prison, we go on our own jobs you G.I good luck" He said then he lead his group away as they were gone.

I sighed and motion for Scully, Bucky and Marshall to follow me as we slowly made our way to the prison camp.

It was like looking at fort, had search lights, guard towers and who knows how many guards.

"Well your in charge what do we do?" Marshall asked, I held my rifle then spoke "We wait til night...one way or another we'll get our boys out" I said.
