19 The Mayor

"Stop! You may not proceed any further!"

Enzo and Pepper were now standing in front of the gates to the big mansion.

One of the guards screamed at them as they approached.

The two guards were dressed in pristine gold armor and carried a similar colored spear.

'They're strong…'

Enzo looked up at their ID's and the guards were both above level 40.

"We have a token." Enzo mumbled somewhat sheepishly.

He took out the bronze mayoral token and showed it to the guard who approached them.

"I have one as well." Pepper took hers out and held it out.

The guard took their tokens and analyzed them for a few seconds.

"Hmmmm."

Enzo was starting to feel nervous. He didn't want to find out that blacksmith pranked them, or that the tokens were fake and he didn't know.

"Alright, I apologize for my previous behavior. You two may follow me."

The guard gave them a deep bow and spoke in a very respectful tone.

Enzo turned to look at Pepper who did the same and looked at him.

They both shrugged simultaneously and followed after the guard who turned around to walk through the gates.

"Open up!" He yelled.

The large metal gates opened inwardly.

The guard led them down a path that winded through a very large garden situated in front of the mansion.

It took slightly over 10 minutes just to get to the front doors because they had to avoid so many flowers, bushes, and trees.

The mansion itself was very luxurious.

It was made of bricks and had a light gray roof.

There were many windows lining the walls, but it was impossible to see through them.

'It's like a one way mirror.'

The guard leading the way went up to the door and knocked five times before stepping back.

Only a few seconds later the door was opened.

A butler stood in the doorway and smiled towards the guard.

"Hello, Marcellus. These two have favor tokens and would like to see the mayor."

"Okay. The mayor is available right now, so you two may follow me." The butler said.

He was a tall, tan skinned man with a long, neatly trimmed white beard and short white hair.

He looked old, but his level told a different story.

'Level 67?!'

The butler was the highest leveled NPC that Enzo and Pepper have come across so far.

The guard didn't follow them into the house so Enzo became slightly anxious, but shook off his thoughts when he realized it would be pointless for the butler to do anything to them.

Their deaths would result in nothing at all, and they would just respawn anyway.

As they walked through the mansion the butler introduced himself, "I am the mayor's personal butler, Marcellus, and you two are?"

"My name is Pepper, it is nice to meet you."

"I go by Atlas."

Marcellus nodded and smiled at them.

He led them to a door at the end of the long hallway on the second floor.

He then knocked a few times and announced himself, "Mayor Dillon, there are a few guests here to see you."

"Bring them in." A deep voice resounded through the door.

Marcellus opened the door and ushered the two in, but didn't follow them.

He quietly closed the door behind himself and left.

"Welcome, is there something I can do for you?" The mayor asked while gesturing for Enzo and Pepper to sit on the chairs in front of his desk.

"Yes, we have two favor tokens that were given to us by William Smith." Pepper answered.

"Ah, okay. Could I see the tokens please?"

They took the tokens out of their inventory once again and handed them to mayor Dillon.

He took a few seconds to inspect them just like the guard at the gate did before confirming they were real.

"Okay, what would you like to ask as a favor?"

Enzo decided to go first just in case his favor would help out Pepper as well so he quickly spoke before she could, "I was wondering if you would know anything about the Inheritances?"

Mayor Dillon's eyebrows rose.

"Goddess Rhea informed us village mayors that we would be asked about them." Dillon said with a smile forming on his face.

"I didn't expect my village to get any bloodline chasers because the chances were so low, but here we are." He was practically beaming at this point.

"I'm sorry sir, but what is a bloodline chaser?"

"It is the term the denizens of this world came up with for the people who went in search of the long lost bloodlines of various races. Our Fae people have been searching for thousands of years for these bloodlines, but without any success. Goddess Rhea appeared in each one of our dreams a while back explaining the situation of the players and how she would help them find the bloodlines."

"Wouldn't that make you guys kind of jealous?" Pepper asked.

The people of this world basically had their goddess tell them that they would never get the chance to obtain something very special, and she was giving that same thing to outsiders. Most people would feel jealous in a situation like this.

"Mmm some of us, yes, but most of us do not mind at all." Dillon said.

"I was instructed to press this button once I received players who not only gained a favor token but also asked about Inheritances or bloodlines. I do not know what will happen after that, but hopefully whatever does will answer your questions."

Dillon fished out a red button from a drawer in his desk.

He held it up for Enzo and Pepper to see.

It was very similar to one of those big red buttons people would press that would then say "No", but without the big "No" written in white letters on the top of the button.

Dillon pressed the button after showing it to them.
