Origin Story

My name is Isabella Apocalypse. I am your narrator. And It is my unfortunate, solemn obligation to tell this tale to you. Why is this chronicle so important? You will learn later, but for now, how about you hear my origin story?

I was born in a small village on the outskirts of Ilmari. I was a child loved by all. I had fair skin, big brown eyes with golden freckles, blonde wavy hair that were like the sun. I was cute and smart. Even though I was just 7, I could pick up weights that some adults couldn't. I was light as paper no matter how much I ate. Although I loved pranks I still was very serious when it came to my family.

In my family it was just me and mum. My dad was a soldier and hadn't come back in over 5 years. Mum says that he is stationed overseas and still contacts her but sometimes I wonder if he is dead.

My mana test was only a day away. I was so excited and couldn't sleep. As far as I can remember I have always wanted to go to the Despoina Academy. It has been one of the most prestigious academies in the world. It is also the only school where all elements are taught and is very mysterious.

It was in Ternion. An island that was once owned by Dark Elves but our heroes defeated them. The academy is actually a renovated version of the Dark Elves royal palace and is known to be gorgeous. It has expert teachers and is the dream of all the children but it is very rare that they take students who aren't royals or nobles.

Royals and nobles are gifted bloodlines with more magic power and all their children have the same elements always. They are blessed and envied. They are the top tiers of the society. Nobility is a high rank that comes immediately after royals. They are powerful and our rulers. Although over the years nobles have become corrupted and arrogant the royals are still courteous to the people.

On the day of my test I swiftly got ready and went with my mother to the test center to get my affinity tested (mana = affinity). Although I hadn't eaten, I didn't feel hungry for food but for my result. Everyone expected that I would have a strong mana capacity which made me jump with joy. After mum filled the official papers and we found good seats I sat down in glee while my mother was wearing a melancholy smile. "Isabella Apocalypse!" they announced.

It was finally my turn "This test doesn't mention how great you are or could be. Just remember no matter what I will always be on your side." my mother suddenly said. I thought she meant that about the fact that I might get other elements than air. But looking back I think what she said suggested otherwise.

I went to the stage and was surrounded by thousands of smiles. They encouraged me and I was confident. I was 8 just like the other kids here and I had worked hard to be treated the same as a boy. To be treated equally. It was my moment. I followed the instructions that were given to me. I peeked at the academy representatives who looked at me with polite smiles.

I placed my hand on the testing gem with my eyes closed and then….
