Chapter 11:Meaning
It's morning, I went to Mio-sha After having my breakfast alone. As usual, A-chan wearing a dark blue hakama greeted me and let me enter the room. Inside it, Mio already started working in the morning diligently.
"Good morning Edge, did you sleep well? I heard Miko left." [Mio]
"Good morning Mio-sha, Thank you but I'm fine. " [Edge]
I was suddenly reminded of the bowl but leaving for it now would be awkward for me. Therefore I could excuse myself to grab the bowl later.
"How was the weight going? Do you feel strained?" [Edge]
"It's going on fine, It seems that I have grown accustomed to it." [Mio]
With Mio sitting in between 2 floating weights, she seems to be quite relaxed and used to it already. I am currently testing the durability of her ability and it has been going on for a week but it seems to be still holding up well. Mio's ability is categorized under the wind attribute because it could be used to lift things. Her ability initially could only lift light objects no heavier than 1.2 kilograms and thickness lesser than 2.5 cm. But now, it could lift anything we had that could be used as a benchmark for measuring strength.
"Today we will be testing range, if it gets straining for you, you should say something ok?" [Edge]
"I understand, let us begin." [Mio]
We moved the table aside and managed to clear a space in the room.
"Mio-sha,I would like you to move the weights as wide as you can apart from each other and also the highest you could make them float." [Edge]
"Okay. " [Mio]
The weights that were statically floating next to her suddenly moved apart from one another. I measured the distance between the two floating weights.
"2.4 meters. Next will be the height please." [Edge]
The weights moved upwards until both of them touched each other in the air.I felt something odd seeing the weights move but I couldn't put a finger on it.
"3.6 meters. You can put them down now. Thanks for your cooperation." [Edge]
"Don't sweat it boy, so you want to take a short break? After all, Fubuki-chan will be giving you a hard time after this. "[Mio]
"Haaa.. and at night there's Calli.."[Edge]
The weights moved downwards at a cyclic motion At that moment, I seemed to have understood the odd feeling when I see the movement of the weights.
"Mio-sha we are going to need to do a few more tests today. Please bear with it." [Edge]
"Seeing how serious you are about this I am sure you discovered something. Of course, I'll go along with it."[Mio]
"I need you to stand over there and a huge paper to be stuck on that wall." [Edge]
After getting approval, A-chan helped us set up the paper on the wall and exited the room.
"Mio-sha, move the weights up again and stop when I say it." [Edge]
At every stop, I drew a line across the paper and the result was having 2 points where the lines from both weights coincided. There is a space between the rotational axis of the weight.
From simple movements,
"Please move the weights the farthest you can after turning 90 degrees to the right."[Edge]
The box moved from behind Mio at 180 degrees and moved upwards to 90 degrees then downwards 270 degrees and returned to the original position making a 360 degrees rotation. The execution was perfect and from the lines It made. it confirms that there's an axis for the movement. However, why did it stopped before moving again at the beginning of the movement? Why can't it move the box endlessly in circles without pausing after it reached the starting point? Then I tried to make it move randomly, that is where I found the limitation. There is an area that is between the spaces of both axis where the ability could not move the boxes.
After a change of new paper, this time I planned to get the outline of the forbidden area the weight could not move through. I asked Mio to hold 1 brush with the ability this time.
"Mio-sha, swing the brush around horizontally. "[Edge]
From the way it swung I could tell it was being held by the right axis.Now, I could only hope that it would work.
"Mio-sha, make sure that your left is the wall. Then control the brush so that it points at the wall and draws downwards when trying to push the brush inwards. "[edge]
Lines were made on the paper, a huge bulge was first drawn then the line went inwards. Afterward, we went upwards and it finally revealed itself. What we got is the front drawing of a creature standing 2.6 m tall with horns and from the curves, we could predict that it is very muscular.
"Do you think it has wings at the back?" [Mio]
We looked at each other and decided to go on with the drawing of his back. After finding out it has been using his limbs to carry the weight all along, we also managed to get a drawing of its arm. The full picture we got was that the ability has a muscular physique, arms of a human, horns of buffalo or sheep, a bird-like beak, and a tail speculated by Mio-sha belong to a wolf.
"What kind of horrifying creature is this."[Edge]
"I would have never thought my ability looks this cool, I shall name it Hatotaurus!"[Mio]
Now that we have a rough outline of what the ability looks like, I would like to run a few more tests but only then I realized It's going to be lunchtime soon. More importantly, I forgot about bringing the bowl Miko entrusted me with.
"I'm sorry Mio-sha just one more thing could you wait for me just for a moment?" [Edge]
"Haha go ahead Edge I could wait here all day." [Mio]
Mio sat down comfortably on the floor while I ran to my room and get back to Mio-sha with the dark purple bowl in hand.
"Oya, what could that be?" [Mio]
"Its an obsidian dog bowl by Miko, she intends to gift it to you" [Edge]
Mio lets out a sad expression, her ears drooped down and she seems to be holding her tears back.
"Mikocchi didn't have to do that. That was very kind of her, I appreciate her gift."[Mio]
"Mio-sha are you fine?" [Edge]
"I'm not fine child, I broke a precious bowl belonging to the previous beast god."[Mio]
"She gave me the bowl before she left for the lost continent and promised that she would bring back many so many Yubis to fill it for me." [Mio]
She broke down and cried, shivered like an animal.
"What happened?"[Edge]
"She never came back...She disappeared along with that country."[Mio]
"When I dropped the bowl I was trying to use my ability to hold it in the air but it was too heavy and the skill couldn't pick it up."[Mio]
"So it broke. " [Edge]
Mio stood up gracefully and pulled out a wooden box from the shelf. Inside it lies a broken yellow bowl with a pattern of a white dog.
She was the gentlest and most caring Cavelier I've ever met. She ate the rest of her brother and sisters in the litter when she's in her mother's womb.[Mio]
"What?..." [Edge]
"Hahaha, you should look at your face, you were totally surprised Hahahaha. That was just a joke alright. "[Mio]
"The previous beast god, what is she really like? Is she stronger than Calli?"[Edge]
"No, I don't think anyone could be stronger than her but Korone she-"[Mio]
Mio told me a lot about the previous beast god but I felt bewildered by Mio-sha action to keep the broken bowl. Hence, spoke in an even tone.
"Why do you still keep it? When there's no meaning to do so." [Edge]
There was no anger or emotions to be felt from Mio-sha after she heard my response. She spoke softly to me.
"Why would you think of it that way Edge?" [Mio]
"It's already broken and cannot be used anymore, there would be no meaning in keeping it." [Edge]
"But to me, it holds something more than a broken bowl Edge" [Mio]
"It wouldn't matter anyway, maybe after we die it would become just a broken bowl anyways. To me, there is simply no meaning in everything Mio-sha."
Mio sha paused for a moment seemingly shocked by my statement but then it turns into graceful laughter.
"Hahahahaha, you may be right but I think otherwise Edge." [Mio]
Mio patted her lap which means she wants me to lay my head on top of her lap.I obediently do so for her to continue.
"Meaning is not meant to be found. After we die, the bowl might have lost the meaning that we know and that's right. But meaning is meant to be given, and we live so that we could give our life a meaning. So if anyone were to discover our broken bowl they can simply give it a new meaning." [Mio]
"Something along the lines of trash?" [Edge]
"Maybe, but if I cherish this bowl enough I could pass down the meaning of the bowl to my successors."[Mio]
"Are you going to do it?"[Edge]
"Of course not, this bowl means everything about Korone-chan to me. The memories of her using it ever since she's a child are still fresh in my mind. To me, it means my bond with her. Do you understand Edge?" [Mio]
"A little..."[Edge]
Mio saw through me and know that I am still not fully understanding the meaning of the bowl to her.
"Ok, let's start with your name Edgelord 360noscope, What's the meaning of your name." [Mio]
"Excuse me my name is only Edgelord and nothing else."[Edge]
"Fubuki-chan as your teacher reserves the right to give your second name, I see she hasn't told you yet."
"Why can't I just get a decent or normal name...." [Edge]
After being given a short rest over my naming crisis Mio continued.
"Did Calli ever tell you the meaning of your name?"[Mio]
"She tried to but I thought it was meaningless." [Edge]
Mio seems to be out of ideas on making me understand her point. Then she jumped up excitedly and said.
"That's it, your Kazoo, you play it every night after practicing with Calli."[Mio]
"Wait, you could hear it all along!?" [Edge]
"The walls here are thin, back to the topic, the kazoo that you're holding! What meaning does it have to you?"[Mio]
Wait does this means everyone knows I've been playing it in this palace? throwing away such thoughts for now I began thinking about Mio-sha's question,
I liked playing the kazoo and it was given by Calli. She's the one who taught me how to play it but she gave it to me because I couldn't win anything In Polka's circus. Therefore, the kazoo means Calli? No, If I were to give it a meaning it would mean the help that I received from Calli throughout our journey.
"It's the first gift I received from Calli... and it means a lot to me because it represents what we've been through?" [Edge]
Mio let out a bright smile unlike her usual elegance and ruffled my hair.
"Hahahahaha, I know you're a bright kid, now that u can understand me you should ask Calli about the meaning of your name next okay?" [Mio]
A set of heavy footsteps approach us at a hurried pace. The door opens and It's Fubuki sensei.
"I've been waiting to eat lunch with you for 20 minutes! What took you so long?" [Fubuki]
"Hahahaha, I'm sorry Fubuki, but I would like to eat with the boy during meals from now on, would you like to join us?"[Mio]
Fubuki was stunned by her statement, her eyes opened wide and her tail stood up.She grinds her teeth and yelled.
"NO!" [Fubuki]
