Chapter 1

(1st POV)

"Ben hurry up and get to the shelters" My father shouted while ushering other civilians in. The kaiju sirens were going off crazy. All I could hear were civilians trampling over the road trying to get to the shelter while the alarms were blaring. Behind me I saw the jaegers coming out of the hangers to fight a copper head and acid quill that broke in the city walls.

They would've been able to evacuate everyone early if not for their steps. For some reason even though they are so big the steps are nearly impossible to hear. And their huge size should've made it easy to spot but they are extremely fast, only giving the city a couple minutes to prepare.

One of the jaegers had just come out jumping right over us, and shooting a missile at the acid quill. Another jaeger came after and started fighting the copperhead. My father, a police officer, had been helping the elderly and sick get into the shelters during this. I finally made it into the shelter only to hear a loud roar then a crash. Looking behind me I saw the jaeger fighting the copperhead get launched towards the shelter. "Close the gates NOW!" I heard one of the civilians yell. The jaeger stopped itself and ran back towards the copperhead.

"Wait there are still more people" Someone else said but no one noticed him, well I did. Other civilians tried to close the gate themselves. fortunately. My father had just brought an elderly in when the gates were shut behind him. He ran up to me. He looked like he was about to say something but was silent. Most of the civilians got quiet too. All you could hear was a loud crash and roars here and there.

"Don't worry, the jaegers will take care of the kaiju,'' he told me. I didn't say anything and just waited. I've never talked much. Even during my first time in a jaeger I stayed silent. Only giving 1 or maybe 2 word answers to questions. I mainly just listened. It's not like I didn't like talking, I just didn't see the need for it. Even before my mother's death I was silent.

After about ten minutes a loud crash resounded. People started heading to the shelter door. I stayed in my spot though. "Come on ben it's taken care of" i wanted to believe him but I couldn't. It's not like kaiju appeared yesterday. After showing up about 18 years ago kaiju attacks aren't out of the ordinary. I've experienced about eight in my 14 years of life but this one. It felt different in a way. I heard thumping coming from outside the shelter but it doesn't seem like anyone else noticed it.

Sigh "okay ben I'll come get you after everyone leaves the shelter." As he was heading to the door to let everyone out the acid quill burst through the shelter. I saw my father freeze at the sight of before getting dissolved from some of the kaijus saliva. It only glanced for a second before trampling everything with its tails. I started running. There was another exit on the other side of the shelter I remembered about. I ran towards the door but other people were blocking the door trying to get out. I heard more thumping coming from that door, but it was, I assume not loud enough for anyone else to hear. I started backing up closer to the middle of the room but far enough away from the tails.

An even louder crash sounded as the copper head broke through the other side. It didn't even hesitate to start eating the people in front of me. I was lucky enough to hear it before it happened. I looked around and saw no more exits. The acid quill had killed and eaten most of the people near that door and was using its tail to rip open the roof.

I saw that as my chance I climbed some rubble that had fallen down because of the roof being ripped open. Only a few dozen people remained of the thousands brought here. I saw the roof was almost entirely ripped open and climbed in the rubble near the wall. Because of my small body stature it was pretty easy to fit through. I looked out the hole to see the kaiju fully opening the roof and eating the remaining people. I guess I'm lucky for being a silent person because if I had even breathed too loud they might have heard me.

The acid quill had leaned down into the building and started eating what remained of the people while the copperhead left. The acid quill's head was so close that I could see the small indentations on its skin. It felt like eternity when it had finally left. I was about to climb out when I heard something. Not taking my chances I stayed still and listened, only to hear the kaiju's heavy breathing. I couldn't see it anymore but I could hear it right outside the shelter. Another person climbed out of the rubble.

Then a few more, it turned out to be a total of 8 people who hid in the rubble. They started slowly heading towards the door when someone made a noise. The acid quill who hadn't left quickly ate them. I stayed still, not moving and eventually succumbing to sleep.
