Chapter 1 - The End and The Beginning

Cain felt his vision slowly come into focus. Wooden beams and panels constituted the ceiling of the house he found himself in. As he had chosen the starting location himself, he didn't have to wonder as to where he was.

Salty humidity tinged his nose, and mixed with the chemicals, it gave off a pungent odor. He pushed his body upright, feeling the wood creak beneath him. For a moment, a sensation of alienation enveloped his body as he fought to remember who and what he was. Memory kicked in and the world faded away. For a brief moment, he was filled with a sense of exhilaration at being in an alien yet familiar world. He smiled.

He put his feet on the floor, frowning at the squeaky floor boards, and looked at his hands. He could feel a flow of energy, a rush of force, live and potent, resting inside his body and soul. [Chi Mastery] was showing its effects, and he was loving the feel of this extraordinary sensation.

Cain took a deep breath, the heat coalescing in his lungs as a powerful force. Slowly, he exhaled a puff of smoky air, feeling the heat waft from his body. It filled him with no sense of discomfort and only warmth.

His body relaxed, his stance widening, and his hands moving in a strange manner that seemed similar to how a martial artist would perform their move. He smiled and punched. Instincts guided his body in a manner that should have been impossible, his hands and feet moving with force and practice. It was as if he had trained his body all his life. He knew there that he could easily kill or disable a normal human. He also knew that he could be even more lethal if he brought his force to a supernatural level with his firebending.

Relaxing his body, he allowed his chi to course through his body. His senses spread, and for a brief moment, he could feel the life force surrounding him.

Cain took a look at his home, where he lived for two years. His memory of his life before making its presence known, as he remembered the life he had spent with his family, Emotions overcame him briefly as he remembered that time. [Resolve] came to his rescue as he pushed aside the feelings and looked at his status window.

Looking at the glowing phantom of a scroll that listed his perks and all, Cain took a moment to look through everything. His eyes locked to the last two sections, where it listed the [Body Mod] and [Personal Reality]. In an instant, a thought clicked in his mind, and he reached for something in his pocket.

Cain smiled as he fished out a key that looked quite ordinary from the outside, yet he knew it was anything but. [Access Key] to his personal reality, well, specifically to his cosmic warehouse. He looked toward the dingy closet, hard to discern from the corner of the room it rested in. He walked forward and inserted the key in the keyhole.

The door opened with a click, but instead of finding his mud-stained and reeking clothes, he was greeted by an [Entrance Hall] with a single door that led to his warehouse. It was cubic in shape, being 5 meters in dimension. It was blank and white and looked to be made of common brick and cement. Cain smiled at the wondrous feature that now accompanied his journey.

Before he delved deeper, he decided to seal his little house with as much security as drawing curtains and blocking the door with a plank could give. Once he was sure that no one would disturb him, he moved inside the entry hall.

Cain ran his hand over the smooth wall and looked up to see nothing but the ceiling, yet the effects of [Natural Lighting] made it so that inwardly it was no different from the world outside during the day. Even the temperature and humidity were milder than outside.

He opened the door that led to the warehouse. The first thing that he noticed was the [Basic Accommodation] looking rather lonely in this vast warehouse. And vast it was. Cain wouldn't call it huge by any means, but the fact that he owned it all left him with a strange feeling. In another direction, he noticed a building somewhat similar to the barracks. He didn't need to guess to understand that it was the [Medical Bay].

Feeling a rush of excitement, he made his way over to the barracks first. It was, as he knew from the knowledge, a simple accommodation with a bunk bed and an attached shower and toilet. A simple platter rested on the table with two loaves of bread smeared with peanut butter. Feeling slightly hungry, he wolfed down the breakfast in a matter of seconds and took a sip from the bottle of water.

After that, he decided to explore the Medical Bay as well, being fascinated by the advanced equipment that looked straight out of Sci-Fi. Although the facility itself was small, it looked like a miniature hospital.

Aside from the buildings, his warehouse consisted of circuits, routers, and piping fixtures that ran along the walls. The amount of water and electricity he had was overwhelming, to say the least, yet he also knew that what he had was only a small part of the whole and that in the future, he could get some more handy upgrades.

Cain decided to end his exploration after he finished checking the shelves. He was worried that someone might accidentally stumble upon this doorway to a different reality.

Intent on avoiding any accidents, he left the warehouse and closed the door. It was at this point that he remembered something and looked at the key in his hand. Since the status window hadn't listed the perk, he had almost forgotten about it, which was strange considering his memory was practically infallible. In seconds, he realized what exactly had transpired. As it turned out, his memory might be infinite and he might remember everything, but that didn't mean that he could remember everything all at the same time. He had perfect recall, but his processing capabilities were still somewhat human as compared to his eldritch memory.

He shook his head and decided not to think about it too much. Instead, he looked at the door and took a deep breath. Whatever he was going to see past the door would change his life forever. This would no longer be a dream, but a reality that he was now part of.

It was the day of summer. The bright sun shone on the Jang Hui River that day. People sauntered about, moving from bay to bay, hooking their boats, and resting their spoils. Yet one could easily make out the shroud of gloom hanging over their heads.

Cain took a look around the place, his heart beating with excitement. This was no longer a cartoon that he had watched when he was young. It was as real as his life before he had come here. The muddy river didn't escape his notice, and he remembered the factory that was set up here just five years ago.

Cain frowned and moved toward the edge, pulling up a handful of water that was murky brown and smelled like trash. The fish were constantly dying in the river, and the water itself had become a cesspool of disease for the local inhabitants.

Suddenly, a white light shone into existence before his eyes, and a series of words wrote themselves in the air.

[The Jang Hui River is disease-stricken and a source of pain and suffering. Stop the river from being polluted further and restore it to its previous appearance.

Reward - 100 CP]

He smiled as he saw the words of light and turned to leave.

Every day, the fishermen would drive through the river, catch the fish, and clean the river. Despite the constant effort of the people, the river kept getting worse in appearance and utility.

"Hey Xu!" He waved his hands at the man tying his boat to the harbor. The old man, wearing the standard fire-nation clothes and a hat, smiled and waved back.

"Cain, you are up early today." Xu stood before him, looking considerably younger and healthier than his show counterpart. He didn't even suffer from the split personality disorder yet.

"I was hoping for a lift to Crescent Island." Cain stated.

Xu smiled and started untying the rope. The two were aboard; the older man started to row the boat, and they drew farther away from the village.

Cain was silent for some time and then asked, "Anything of note happening around?"

"The Siege at Ba Sing Se finally came to an end." Xu said.

"Oh, when did that happen? Tell me more." Cain asked.

"About two weeks prior," Xu said. "Fire Lord Ozai was crowned as the new fire lord, while General Iroh withdrew his forces from the wall. Although they still hold control over Western Lake, without the General himself, it's highly unlikely for them to breakthrough."

A frown marred his features as he remembered reading about the siege ending in 95 AG. That meant that Lu Ten was dead, and Iroh was grieving. Ozai had used this opportunity to ascend the throne, and Ursa was gone.

Cain pieced together what he could from his memories. Xu spoke further about the other ongoing events happening around the Fire Nation Bazaar.

The boat parked itself near the port, and Cain alighted after paying his fare. His steps took him toward the main street, occupying stalls that sold varying degrees of merchandise. It was time he brought himself some clothes.
