1 James Joyce’s Ulysses: 100 years on – event cancelled

Professor Plock will join us at the BRLSI via livestream from Exeter to give her talk on James Joyce's Ulysses.

This lecture will offer an introduction to James Joyce's most famous novel, Ulysses. Originally published in Paris in 1922, Ulysses was soon hailed as a twentieth-century masterpiece which challenged but also delighted readers around the globe. By looking at Joyce's biography and aspects of the novel, the lecture will investigate why Ulysses has acquired this kind of cultural capital and continues to be relevant even one hundred years after its first publication.

Professor Vike Martina Plock is Head of English at the University of Exeter. Her book Joyce, Medicine, and Modernity was published in 2010. She has published extensively on Joyce and is an advisory editor of the James Joyce Quarterly, the flagship journal of Joyce studies.
