Chapter 8

Edie shook her head.

“Please Edie.” Lightning bathed the room in too bright light for a second before everything went dark.

“Great.”

Gael shrugged, both of them were able to see in the dark. There was a thud, a crash, and a curse on the second floor.

“You might as well take him now.”

“What?”

“Archie doesn’t do well without light or coffee, and without electricity, there won’t be any coffee in the morning.” She went over to the rows of bookshelves. “Archie!” 3

Archie clung to the banister as he went down the stairs. The knot in his stomach consumed him, but he couldn’t say why it had started to grow. It would become clear soon enough. The swish of a match made him turn toward the counter where Edie lit a candle.

“You better pack your overnight bag, darling. You’re going on an adventure.”

He stared at her, not moving a muscle. The walls were creeping in, trapping him in a vise.

“I know but imagine how cool it will be when you can add hero to your resume.”
