Chapter 21

The man turned away. “An old wives’ tale, nothing to get upset about.”

What? A ghost hand managed to drill its way into his mind and down to his stomach. “I’m sorry.” Archie put the cup next to the nuts on the counter and stepped in behind it. The man protested, but Archie couldn’t stop now. He bent down, crawled in behind the stool underneath the table, and searched the floor. His fingertips flew over sand and dust, someone really should sweep here, until he brushed against something solid. The ghost hand curled its fingers around his intestines, forcing him to pick it up.

A brass clock key.

Archie looked at it, got to his feet, and dusted off his clothes before handing the key to the man. “It needed to be found.”

“You’re really a Jaeger? I thought you were human with an unfortunate name.”

Archie gave him a blank look. “I am an almost human with an unfortunate name.”

The man laughed.
