CHAPTER 14

Y/N'S POV

Once in Jericho they made us go to a kind of sports center and there each team gathered in their locker room. In charge of us was the director Duncan, who only asked us to play fair and not use our skills to win. She was basically asking us to give the rival team a chance to beat us, although obviously that wasn't going to happen.

When Duncan left Xavier gave a talk to encourage us all and then we started to leave the locker room to head to the rink where the event would take place. It was quite a surprise to meet Brooke face to face, because I thought she would have stayed at Nevermore in charge of the library. Later she explained to me she didn't because being the daughter of the mayor and the director of the academy, it was her duty to be present at a unification event between normies and excluded. Everything made sense then, her father was there to officiate the meeting and that's why Principal Duncan had offered to be our tutor.

- Brooke: Best of luck out there! - she encouraged me - Although I also want the human team to win - she acknowledged.

-Xavier: I'm really sorry, but you're going to have to see the trophy in the Nevermore showcases - he passed his arm around my shoulders and then I made him a key to throw it on the floor - Y/N! - he complained.

-Y/N: No touching me, you know that - I looked at Brooke - it's his fault for not remembering.

Maybe it was also a little bit my fault for having made him such an aggressive key, but I just wasn't feeling in a very good mood, let's say. I didn't feel like participating in that nonsense, but I had already committed to doing it and I had no other option left. Everyone was counting on me, I couldn't fail. The mayor introduced both teams and then each team sent its first pitchers to the front. Xavier chose me to go second after him, because he wanted to ensure the points in case he failed.

I walked and positioned myself next to him while watching how he aimed at his bullseye, he didn't have bad technique, I had to admit it. I decided not to stay behind and picked up one of the arrows determined to make a bullseye, however a strange sweat began to cover my entire body and I began to feel strangely tense. I wasn't comfortable at all.

"Wednesday and I had convinced Pugsley to run around the garden with an apple on his head. We had promised him a reward if he managed to get neither of us to hit the apple, which was practically impossible. My cousin and I were each at a window from where we shot the arrows. Every time he looked at Wenny, I would find her smiling as she enjoyed the terror in her brother's eyes. That made a smile appear in me instantly, because those were my favorite moments, when we had fun together."

Why was I remembering that at that very moment? I tensed the rope and positioned myself firmly aiming at the center of the bullseye. However, when it came the time to let the arrow go, I bend my legs too much and it didn't hit the target. That caused the surprise among all the people present who looked at me as if I had committed a murder. To tell the truth, I also didn't believe that I had missed a shot at an immobile target. What was happening to me?

- Xavier: Hey Y/N. Are you all right? - he said coming closer to me - That pitch is not like you... You are able to hit a fly without even looking.

-Y/N: My hands were sweating and my arrow slipped at the last moment - I said quintanently - Don't worry about me and concentrate on don't miss, I won't do it again.

-Wednesday: You better do because you have promised us the trophy for our showcases - she said sitting on the bench occupied by our archers - Do it as you know, or I will cut you in canal.

I didn't understand anything. At what time did Wednesday arrive? And why was she sitting there? I looked around and could make out the rest of the group sitting in the stands while we were being cheered on. Had they come for us? Why? It was not necessary and at no time had we asked for it. While I was certainly confused, I suddenly felt calmer and more confident. I didn't think twice and I shot making a bullseye. That was the way to go, I wasn't going to break my promise to win the trophy.

ENID'S POV

A few hours earlier...

After following Y/N to the school bus, I realized that at no time were any words spoken. It made me suspect that something had happened between them because since early in the morning they had been acting strange. It was about one of my best friends and... Well, Y/N. Couldn't I define my relationship with her? How strange. Anyway, that wasn't the point. The thing was that I didn't want to see either of them depressed and I had to help them solve the problem. I cared too much about both of them to let it be.

- Wednesday: Are you going to talk or can I leave now? I have writing time - she said crossing his arms - The second part of my novel is not going to write itself. You know?

- Enid: Was the first part well received? - I smiled impressed.

-Wednesday: I don't want to talk about it - I guess not - Better tell me what you need from me so I can leave as soon as possible.

- Enid: Has something happened to you with T/N? - I said subtly fearing her answer - It seems that you have quarreled...

- Wednesday: And what if it has been like that? It's family business, you don't have to mess - she said trying to walk back to our room but I stopped her - Enid - she gave me a bad look - Let me go.

-Enid: Y/N is weird too, I think even if she doesn't say it... She is hurt because you have argued - I played with her hands - I think it would be best if you made up, you are family after all.

-Wednesday: Family doesn't leave you when you need it the most - she said out of nowhere surprising me - Y/N wasn't there when my scorpion thing happened. According to what she told me, she was sent in a box to Japan... I understand that she was not there at that time. But why did she never reach out to me? - she pressed his lips together.

When I saw the face Wends made I understood everything, she wasn't as hard as she made out. The reality was that the relationship she had with Y/N was so personal and special to her that she really felt betrayed. And the worst of all was that they both felt equally bad but refused to acknowledge it by playing hard to get. Couldn't they see how much they loved each other?! They didn't know it yet, but I had a feeling that they were actually much closer than they thought.

-Enid: You'll have to ask her that yourself - I smiled - for the moment, you could go and support her. When I said goodbye to her, I didn't notice her with much confidence, let's say.

-Wednesday: That's impossible, Y/N would never miss shooting at a fixed target - she looked at me - How important is this stupid competition?

-Enid: There'll be the mayor of Jericho, Director Duncan, and we're playing pride against the Normies. It's kind of like an ultimate battle... I think - I said a little unsure.

-Wednesday: - she crossed her arms and averted his gaze to Thing.

-Thing: "I think Y/N will be very glad if we go to cheer her up"

- Wednesday: How long until it starts? - she asked me - Will we be on time if we leave already?

-Enid: - I started jumping up and down with excitement - That's how I like it! The family has to support each other - I smiled to myself as I remembered my relationship with my relatives - you have to value what you have before you lose it.

-Wednesday: - she sighed - I hate these stupid events - she started walking towards the exit of the academy - I will call "Lurch" to take us there.

- Enid: Perfect! Let's also warn Yoko and the rest - I smiled as I walked beside her.
