The Boys is set in a universe where superpowered individuals called Supes are recognized as heroes by the general public and work for a powerful corporation known as Vought International, which markets and monetizes them. Outside of their heroic personas, most are arrogant, selfish, and corrupt. The series primarily focuses on two groups: the Seven, Vought's premier superhero team, and the Boys, vigilantes looking to bring down Vought and its fake superheroes.

The Boys are led by Billy Butcher, who despises all Supes, and the Seven are led by the unstable and violent Homelander. At the start of the series, the Boys are joined by Hughie Campbell after the superhero A-Train accidentally kills his girlfriend while high on drugs. Elsewhere, the Seven are joined by Annie January, a young and hopeful heroine forced to face the truth about those she admires. Other members of the Seven include the disillusioned Queen Maeve, the insecure Deep, the mysterious Black Noir, and the white supremacist Stormfront. The Boys are rounded out by tactical planner Mother's "MM" Milk, weapons specialist Frenchie, and superpowered test subject Kimiko. Overseeing the Seven is Vought executive Madelyn Stillwell, who is later succeeded by publicist Ashley Barrett, themselves overseen by Vought CEO Stan Edgar, who also maintains controlled governmental opposition via his adoptive daughter Congresswoman Victoria Neuman.

Tales of Suspense #39

(December, 1962)

There's only two things I ever managed to believe in. Firstly, myself. And even then only about 50% of the time. Secondly, the future. That there would be one and we'd make it.  —Tony Stark[src]

Tony Stark is a genius inventor and billionaire industrialist, who suits up in his armor of cutting-edge technology to become the super hero Iron Man. The adopted son of weapons manufacturer Howard Stark,[39] Tony inherited his family's company at a young age following his parents' death.[40] While overseeing a manufacturing plant in a foreign country, Stark was kidnapped by local terrorists. Instead of giving in to his captors' demands to build weapons for them, Stark created a powerful suit of armor for himself to escape.[41] Returning to America, Stark further upgraded the armor and put his vast resources and intellect to use for the betterment of the world as Iron Man.[42][43]

Tony kept his alter-ego a secret for most of his career, juggling his responsibilities as head of Stark Industries while becoming a key player in the superhuman community as Iron Man and founding the world's premier super hero team, the Avengers.[44] Over the years, Stark has faced numerous enemies, such as the Mandarin, Justin Hammer, Iron Monger, and the Titanium Man, as well as many personal demons, most notably his addiction to alcohol.[45] For many years, Tony covered for his alter-ego by claiming that Iron Man was his anonymous bodyguard, but Tony eventually brought his dual identity to the public light.[46]

Recently, Tony escaped death by reconfiguring his body with a digital back-up of his mind,[47] inadvertently causing him to become temporarily convinced that he was a clone of the real, late Tony Stark.[48] This resulted in Tony leading an army of artificial-life forms in a war against the anti-A.I. campaign of his adoptive brother Arno.[1] After coming around to the fact that he was the real Tony Stark all along, Tony stopped Arno's deranged plan to enslave humanity to stop a non-existent alien threat,[49] and he then opted to embark on a journey of self-discovery to escape the baggage of his career. Stepping away from his high-tech lifestyle, Tony finds himself returning to his roots in an attempt to put back the "man" in Iron Man.[50]

History

This is an abridged version of Tony Stark's history. For a complete history see Tony Stark's Expanded History

Birth and Adoption

Anthony Edward Stark, also known as Tony Stark, was born to two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Amanda Armstrong and Jude. Jude was a secret Hydra double-agent with little regard for anybody but himself and regularly sold out fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. He was almost responsible for Amanda's own death at the hands of an assassin. However, he fell in love with Amanda before sending her to her death and decided to save her.[51] After this incident they got to know each other and began a relationship.[52] Two years later, Amanda became pregnant. A week before giving birth to the baby, Jude decided to reveal his true allegiance to Amanda and its implications in Jude's timely intervention that saved her life. The subsequent discussion escalated, and Amanda killed Jude.

Traumatized by this development, Amanda asked S.H.I.E.L.D. to ensure her future baby would find a safe and happy home. However, director Nick Fury followed the same procedure used for unwanted pregnancies in the agency, and the baby was left in an orphanage in Sofia, Bulgaria after Amanda birthed him in a local hospital. Fury's associate and famous industrialist Howard Stark learned of this and decided to find the baby and adopt him, keeping the name Amanda wished he retained: Anthony.[51]

Howard Stark presenting Tony to Maria

In addition to Howard and his wife Maria suffering the latter's inability to give birth again,[52] they needed to find a healthy boy to act as a decoy in place of their secret firstborn, Arno Stark. Arno's gestation had been extremely difficult, and his birth was only made possible with the help of an alien robot, the Rigellian Recorder 451, who had agreed to help the baby survive in exchange for the opportunity to bioengineer him, so he could accelerate humanity's technological growth in the future.[53]

However, as 451 genetically modified the baby in the womb, Howard had discovered the robot hid some sort of kill switch, that would compromise the life of his son in the future, for which Stark developed a "biococktail" to interfere with it behind 451's back.[39] Once Arno was born, 451 left the Earth.[54] In a turn of events, Howard's interference with 451's machinations caused the newborn to become fatally ill. The Starks decided to keep the baby hidden in the Maria Stark Foundation Hospice.[39] In addition to filling the void left by Arno's fatal illness, Tony's adoption would prevent 451 from learning of Howard's meddling if it ever returned to Earth.[39]

Early Life and Education

Tony grew up completely unaware of the existence of Arno or that he was adopted.[39] While loved unconditionally by Maria, Tony suffered from a strained relationship with his father, both due to the contrast of Tony's sensitive and reclusive nature with Howard's glorification of physical prowess[55] and Howard's ever-increasing drinking habits, which caused him to verbally abuse Tony[56] and suffer from mood swings. This last factor caused Tony to turn to electronics as a coping mechanism at barely five years old, as he started to believe hardware to be comprehensible and reliable, whereas people were unpredictable and hard to understand. Tony's world couldn't find order, but the things he built did.[57]

Tony's childhood

In order to toughen his son, Howard sent Tony to boarding school at the age of seven, much to Maria's dismay. In the following years, Tony learned of discipline of body and strength of character as Howard intended, while spending his free time reading alone. At the age of thirteen, the stories of Arthurian legends opened Tony the doors to a new world of dedication to a cause greater than oneself, of chivalry, honor, and armored heroes.[55]

After boarding school, Tony joined an undergraduate program at MIT at the age of fifteen.[citation needed] He would effortlessly graduate as class valedictorian with double majors in physics and engineering.[40] When he was seventeen, Tony met Meredith McCall, his first love and, unfortunately, the daughter of Howard's greatest business rival. Their relationship didn't develop beyond being a summer love, due to the combined interference of Meredith's father and Howard. Meredith was sent to live with relatives, and Tony was scheduled to go to Europe for education, with neither being told where the other was.[58]

Tony's young adult life

The break-up was numbed by Tony's school routine at Cambridge University in England, where he met another girl named Cassandra Gillespie. Worse luck, Cassandra was also the daughter of a rival weapons manufacturer of Howard.[59] Their relationship and Tony's attendance to Cambridge were both cut short by Howard, who believed the recently-established relationship to be nothing but a way for the Gillespie's to get information on Howard through Tony.

Go ahead. Release it. Let's light this candle, huh? I mean, sure, I'll lose everything, but then, I'll have nothing to lose. First, I'll take out the nerve centers--White House, Pentagon--then any domestic defense capabilities, and then critical infrastructure--like cellular, Internet, that kind of thing--and then, well, I think then. I'll just wipe New York off the fucking map for fun. I'll even throw in Des Moines and that little cousin-fucker hick town that Maeve's from, cause why not? See, Starlight, I'd prefer to be loved. I would, but if you take that away from me, well, being feared is A-one okey-doke by me. So. Go ahead, partner. Do it. No? You don't want to do it? Well, then, I would have to say that you have absolutely no fucking leverage because I am the Homelander. And I really can do whatever the fuck I want.HOMELANDER

Homelander is the main antagonist of the Amazon series The Boys, as well as the main antagonist of its spin-off series The Boys Presents: Diabolical. He is also the leader of the Seven, one of the strongest Supes in the world, and the archenemy of Billy Butcher, the leader of The Boys.

With the face of a movie star and the power of a god, Homelander is considered the greatest superhero alive and the leader of The Seven. Not only can he fly, but he also has super strength and super hearing, and he can see through almost anything (except zinc) with his x-ray vision and then destroy it with his laser eyes.

On the surface, he's affable, modest, and sincere; the ultimate Boy Scout, an American treasure, a God-fearing patriot. But just like mere mortals, even superheroes have secrets.

Background

Childhood

You should've been raised in a home with a family who loved you. Not in a cold lab with doctorsJONAH VOGELBAUM TO HOMELANDER

Homelander was born before March 16, 1994 and was raised in a lab, surrounded by doctors like Jonah Vogelbaum, who called him John. For not having a motherlike figure, Vogelbaum remarked that Homelander turned violent, aggressive, and downright hateful ("The Self-Preservation Society"). In his childhood, he was subjected to hours sitting in front of a projector, seeing images that were chosen to mold his personality, like the American flag, Jesus Christ, and baseball. He had a motherlike figure, a female doctor, but she was killed by Homelander himself when he was young and innocent after he hugged her strongly, accidentally breaking her spine. Prior to her death, he had caused similar incidents to countless other tutors, a behavior that was usually motivated by indignation, but this time caused by isolation induced depression.[1]

Joining The Seven

The terrorists had a bomb. I tried to cover it with my body, but the blast was too much. Only Noir and I survived. I failed you all." "Are you kidding? You risked our lives for us! You're a hero!" "Thank you all. But those poor hostages, they were the real heroes.HOMELANDER SPEAKING TO THE PRESS FOLLOWING HIS ILL-FATED FIRST MISSION.

Homelander and Stillwell following the former's first mission.

Years later, he became the new member of The Seven, presented by Stan Edgar and Madelyn Stillwell to the public. The most popular member of The Seven at that time, was Black Noir. Following his introduction, Noir came onto the stage and immediately stole Homelander's spotlight, much to his and Stillwell's anger. Following this, Stillwell convinced Homelander not to let Black Noir upstage him. ("One Plus One Equals Two")

Homelander is soon teamed up with Noir on his first mission; stopping a group of terrorists who have taken hostages at a chemical plant. Refusing to wait for Black Noir, Homelander immediately went inside and subdued two of the terrorists, breaking one of their noses in the process. He then confronted the rest. When they refused to back down, Homelander twisted their guns. However, one of the terrorists still held a hostage at gunpoint, despite the gun not working anymore. Homelander, horribly underestimating his abilities, used his heat vision to heat up the gun, causing it to explode, killing the hostage and destroying the man's hand. When the man's associate started screaming at him, he lost his mind and clamped his hand over her mouth, accidentally ripping out her jaw. This leads the hostages screaming at him and calling him a maniac, resulting in him killing everybody in a fit of rage, leaving only one hostage still alive. Black Noir then appeared in the doorway. Thinking that he will rat him out to Vought, Homelander attempted to kill Black Noir with his heat vision, accidentally bringing down the entire plant. ("One Plus One Equals Two")

After pulling himself out of the rubble, Homelander saw the hostage crawl out of the wreakage and towards a still alive Black Noir. To Homelander's surprise, however, Noir coldly snapped the woman's neck while comforting her. Noir then helped Homelander come up with an excuse to cover up the failure of the mission. This event lead to a mutual respect between the two. However, Homelander's lack of control deeply hardened him and possibly added to his already unstable mind. ("One Plus One Equals Two")

Meeting Becca Butcher

My dad always said: 'Surround yourself with people smarter than you.'HOMELANDER TO BECCA BUTCHER

Homelander met Becca Butcher in a Vought private Christmas party in 2011. He talked with Becca, the new Senior Director from the department of Digital Marketing of Vought, and said that he loved the work she did with his official twitter profile. Before ending the conversation to see Queen Maeve, Homelander said that he would like to talk about her taking over the rest of his social media accounts ("The Self-Preservation Society").

Raping Becca Butcher

Shortly after the two met, Homelander raped Becca, ultimately leading to the birth of Ryan. This event also sparked the course of the entire series, as it fueled Billy Butcher's hatred for Supes and lead to him forming The Boys. Unbeknownst to Homelander and Butcher, however, Becca went to Madelyn Stillwell and Jonah Vogelbaum after getting pregnant. The two secretly kept Becca in witness protection, where she began to raise Homelander's son.

Season One

Killing the Mayor of Baltimore

I happened to know about Compound VTHE MAYOR OF BALTIMORE TO MADELYN STILLWELL

Homelander destroying the Mayor's jet with his heat vision.

After finding out that the Mayor of Baltimore had knowledge about the Compound V, Homelander assured that the existence of the chemical remained a secret by destroying his private jet, taking the Mayor's life in the process, as well as his son, who was excited after receiving an autographed poster of his favorite hero, Homelander himself. ("The Name of the Game").

After The Murder

Have you heard about the Mayor of Baltimore?"

"Yeah...yeah. I heard the plane went downMADELYN STILLWELL AND HOMELANDER

In an informal meeting, Homelander asks about the whereabouts of Translucent. Stillwell gives a direct answer, saying that she doesn't know where he is yet. After that, Stillwell makes an observation about the Mayor of Baltimore. Homelander tries to play it cool, but she knows that it was him who took the jet down, mainly because of The Deep. The two of them have a discussion about what Homelander represents. The meeting ends with Stillwell calling the leader of The Seven "pure", then she successfully eases Homelander ("Cherry").

Homelander and The Deep in a tense meeting

Homelander, unhappy about The Deep's choice of telling Stillwell about the jet's destruction, request the presence of his fellow associate in the meeting room of The Seven Tower. There, they talk about the unfortunate choice of telling Stillwell about the laser beam marks on the jet that the Deep made. Homelander makes his points clear: The Deep keeps his mouth shut, or there will be no Deep to sniff him anymore ("Cherry").

The Search For Translucent

Homelander goes to Crime Analytics and asks Anika the last known location of Translucent. At first, she is not sure if she can share that information with him, to which Homelander replies with a straight "I can do whatever the fuck I want". Anika gets the message and gives Homelander the information he wants ("Cherry").

Homelander seeing Frenchie's ID

Homelander flies to the ten blocks where Translucent is expected to be. There, he sees a van. Inside the van, there is one of The Boys, Frenchie. Homelander doesn't know he's an enemy, so he casually asks for his ID. Frenchie gives it to him, but refuses to let Homelander get a look at the back of the van. This causes him to be suspicious. Homelander decides to look anyway with his x-ray vision, only to see nothing there. An explosion then happens some blocks away, part of a plan to keep Homelander off where Translucent really is. Homelander then goes for it, flying in the direction of the fire ("Cherry").

Mission With Queen Maeve

You guys are the real heroesHOMELANDER TO A SWAT TEAM LEADER

Queen Maeve and Homelander go to a high-rise building, where a sniper is hiding. A SWAT team is in position, but the arrival of two members of the Seven makes them step back. Homelander, with his impressive theatrics, praises the law officers and calls them "real heroes". After that, Maeve and Homelander enter the building. Homelander kills the sniper by penetrating his hand through his chest. In order to keep up appearances, Homelander shoots the sniper's gun several times at Maeve's armor, just to make it look like they were attacked first ("Get Some").

The Race

Who's ready to see a race? A cheer to my boy A-Train. Alright, you fucking cocksuckers.HOMELANDER TO THE RACE'S ATTENDANCE

Homelander arriving at the Race of the Century

Homelander arrives at the Race when Queen Maeve is being interviewed, drawing all attention to him. He makes a speech to the spectators, and after that he says, almost whispering, "you fucking cocksuckers", showing his true feelings about everybody there that isn't a Supe. Then, he and Maeve start a conversation, and Homelander remembers the time when the two of them were dating. He looks back with sincere joy and a feeling of nostalgia. He even tries to get closer to her, with the attendance shouting "kiss her!", but Maeve steps back. After the conversation is over, Homelander sees that a weird man is looking at him in an odd way. They exchange stares ("Get Some").

After the Race is over, Homelander goes back to the Seven Tower. There, he and the Deep show Stillwell a box. She opens it and sees Translucent's remains. Homelander asks Deep what the box is made of, to which he answers "zinc", the only thing Homelander can't see through. Inside the box, there is a message, "COMING FOR YOU", which is basically a declaration of war ("Get Some").

Transoceanic Flight 37

Homelander, are you going to save us?"

"Oh, sweetheart, of course I'm gonna save you. You betcha!A LITTLE GIRL AND HOMELANDER

When a Transatlantic flight Paris-Chicago is hijacked by terrorists, Stillwell sees an opportunity to promote her agenda of getting supes into the military. While the plane is over international waters, she sends Maeve and Homelander to save the plane, believing that a successful rescue of the passengers means that no congressman will dare vote against supes in the military.("The Female of the Species").

Homelander and Maeve watching the plane falling towards the ocean

Homelander and Maeve are easily able to board the plane and kill the terrorists to the applause of the grateful passengers. However, when they enter the cockpit, they find one more terrorist pointing a gun at the pilot, next to a dead co-pilot. Before the supes can stop him, the terrorist shoots the co-pilot. Homelander then uses his heat vision to kill the terrorist, inadvertantly destroying the flight controls in the process. Maeve appeals to Homelander to save the plane, but Homelander points out that he could not carry the plane without a solid surface to stand on. Homelander maintains that they can only abandon the passengers to die. Maeve then appeals to Homelander to save at least a mother and her daughter. Homelander refuses, saying that if they save some passengers and let the rest die, the few who survived will tell the world that the two of the greatest heroes of the world did nothing to save the rest. Maeve, seeing no other choice, embraces Homelander, and together they get out of the plane and fly off. In the distance, they see the plane falling towards the ocean ("The Female of the Species").

Homelander giving a impressive speech

Hours later, Homelander and Maeve are seen on a beach where the plane wreckage is washing ashore. Maeve is truly grieving the loss of the passengers, meanwhile, Homelander decides to act up and gives a speech to the news crews there, appealing to the audience, saying that if super-heroes were on the chain of command of the military, the tragedy of Flight 37 would never happen. By the end of the speech, everyone there was shouting "Homelander". In the Seven Tower, Stillwell watched the speech on her TV with a smirk on her face, knowing that in a way, Homelander did his job ("The Female of the Species").

Aftermath Of The Tragedy

We're here today to remember the victims of Transoceanic Flight 37, 123 brave souls lost in an instant, in a senseless act of violence.HOMELANDER GIVING A SPEECH IN FLIGHT 37'S VICTIMS FUNERAL

In the Seven Tower, A-Train tells Homelander that he killed his girlfriend Popclaw after she told some guys about Compound V. Homelander then said to his colleague that he did the right thing by telling him. Homelander comforts A-Train, but not before making an ominous remark like "I'll always be watching you" ("Good for the Soul").
