The Drive ~ 15

CHAPTER 15

No radio, no talking, just silence and the humming of the engine.

The seaside was remote and it would take an hour and a half to get to the hospital my body was in.

Although everything was quiet, the journey didn't feel awkward, atleast I didn't feel it was.

It was as if I had made a friend, the kind if friend you could sit with in silence without either of you feeling awkward.

Amelia was doodling beside me, I glanced down and saw she was drawing a bird, a humming bird. It was beautiful.

I looked at the tiny screen telling me that the tank was empty. The car began to slow down a little so I swerved into the nearest gas station. Amelia looked up from her paper.

"you need gas?" she questioned as she handed me her phone. 'yes the tank was half empty when we left'

I hoped out of the car and fed the beauty full of gas. The car had a whole tank full before I hopped back in and drove away.

"wait, you didn't pay!?" Amelia exclaimed. "if you needed gas money you couldve asked me!" She didn't hand me the hone this time so I assumed she didn't want me to reply.

The traffic on the main roads was terrible, the 6 o clock traffic.

When everyone was clocking off work.

"ughh" I sighed. "I hate this traffic" before remembering, yet again, nobody can hear me.

We sat in the same, practically stationary traffic until the turning we needed came up. I fizzed in my seat, I felt so close to getting back to normal but I was slightly worried too, what if it doesn't work? What if I can't get into the hospital? Questions and doubts whirled around in my head, hitting my skull in all directions creating a brain splitting headache.

Like a light in the darkness of the mist Amelia spoke. "it's strange... To be driven by nothingness.... Its.. Not awkward but.. Just strange to be sitting here in silence, next to you." She sighed and looked in my direction, it was like looking into a blind person's eyes, they were never quite sure where exactly to look.

I pulled into a layby." everything alright?" Amelia sounded a little panicked but only a little.

I took her phone and started to type.

'yes. Everything's fine I just wondered if you'd want to drive for a little while? I have a seriously bad migraine and.. Truth be told... I'm a little bit scared and the worries of everything is distracting me, I don't want to put your life at danger'

I handed her back the phone and she read it. You could see her eyes moving from left to right as she read through the short paragraph I had written. The screen was bright and it lit up her facial features.

" yeah I'd be happy to drive! Don't worry about anything, and besides, if this doesn't work, I promise you'll always have a place with me even if you are invisible." she smiled warmly before stepping out of the vehicle.

We swapped places and I watched as she turned the key to the ignition.

Amelia knew how to drive and she sure enough did have a drivers license but you could tell she was young and new to most things.

We switched lanes to turn left. Amelia had not put her indicators on. I flipped the indicators down, she wobbled but stayed strong. You could tell she was nervous.

"haha" she chuckled nervously "thanks" she went a little red and became embarrassed.

I rested my head on the door next to me and listened to the buzzing of the car and the bumps in the road. I fell asleep...
