Chapter 25 – Matter of time

I sighed and shoved my phone in my pocket. God, just a fucking moment to breathe, that's all I wanted. A moment to enjoy the warmth of this sexy ass wolf I was paired with, but it looked like that wasn't happening. Hell, we couldn't even have a date night to get to know each other better.

I helped him put stuff away, the anger probably coming off in waves. Grayson stepped up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist and he leaned his head on my shoulder.

"What has you so ticked off?"

"I want a moment of peace. I want a moment to be with you. I want a moment to get to know you. And it feels like I can't be given that."

"Hey, that's not true. You know things about me that no one else does."

"That's not what I mean." He spun me around and kissed my nose before kissing my lips.

"Would you like a 48 hour get away? Just you and me, no phones, nothing to bother us? A way for us to get closer?"

"You would do that?"

"I am a busy guy, but trust me, nothing is more important than getting to know my mate. So, are you game?" I played with my lips and nodded.

"You're an Alpha!" He grinned and then took my hand as he grabbed the basket in the other one.

"Perfect, just leave everything to me."

-----

"What have you found out?" I asked as I walked into the room, followed by Grayson. I looked at both doctors as we stood in the room, both of them being fidgety. I frowned, feeling Grayson next to me, picking up the same vibes.

"You guys okay?" Both doctors glanced at each other.

"You start Vince." Vince nodded his head and looked at Grayson.

"Alpha," he started, "we ran the tests, many tests actually, on both. We even cross examined them, finding out different traits, yet similarities in them." Vince cleared his throat and glanced at the other doctor before going on. "Both are…demonic." I looked at Vince, than my friend John and finally at Grayson, wrinkling my brows.

"How is that even possible?"

"That I can't answer yet Fire," John said, shrugging. "We just know that their bites are lethal and poisonous, that their fangs have some type of poison that comes out."

"But demons don't exist. And even if they did, how the hell would we have demons?" I glanced at Grayson, agreeing with his question.

"I'm sorry sir, I can't answer the how, but I can assure you, that's what they are. The eyes played a huge part in even starting there. But none of us carries poison within our teeth," Vince assured. I pinched my nose and sighed. What the hell was going on? Was this just the start of it?

"We can't be poisoned. You understand this right? It's not as if some other being can just take over us."

"We can't, but we can be bitten and can be changed," John said. "Come look." I walked over to the body of the vampire cut open and then turned as Vince removed the sheet from the wolf, cut open as well.

"As you can see, the organs had started decaying, but if you look," Vince said, pointing to bites on their skin over their hearts, "those are not made by any creatures that we know of. None of us pierce with three sets of fangs." I looked between the two and slowly shook my head.

"In all my years, I have never seen anything like this, not even something I have heard of. How?" Grayson walked up behind me and rested his hands on my shoulders, offering silent support.

"Don't you find it even more odd that this started happening when we meet?" I turned around and looked at him, realizing we were alone.

"You mean, what, exactly?"

"Us, these things, all of this is very unreal and I'm not totally sure it's all a coincidence." I pondered that and shook my head, not sure what to think anymore.

"I wonder if my friend Tessa might be able to shed some light. She's the head of an old family and maybe…" I got cut off as my phone started to ring. I pulled it out, frowning at the caller ID. "Tessa," I said as I picked up.

"Oh Goddess, Fire, I need you to come out, please. We are having a nasty problem with Jo. She's…I don't even know," her French accent coming in strong.

"I'll be right out there. Please don't do anything." I glanced at Grayson as he took my hand and we rushed to his car. I gave him directions as we speed over, the 45 minute drive happening in 20. We pulled up and I glanced around, seeing a few cars and started walking to the front door. But we both paused as we heard a scream and then saw a fire ball crashing through the window. I turned to Grayson as he grabbed my arm, pulling me back against him.

"Since when did witches release fire balls?"

"They don't, that goes against everything they are taught. Grayson," I muttered as I turned around and placed my hand on his chest, "we don't know what we are walking into. We didn't fight the other two and I have no idea how these creatures are."

"You think she's a demon too?" I took a deep breath and nodded.

"I believe that picture I saw in the book and figured it was only a matter of time." Grayson kissed my forehead and pulled me close in a tight embrace.

"I promise, no hero shit," he stated, holding me tighter, "if you promise the same." I had to chuckle as I wrapped my arms around his waist and nodded. He tipped my head up and gave me a soft kiss before turning and opening the door.

My eyes scanned over the scene before me, four witches surrounding a fifth in the middle who kept turning around, looking at everyone else. Her eyes flashed as she kept looking and in her hands another fire ball arose. I watched as it grew and then watched as it got tossed at one of the witches, it being Tessa who quickly ducked. But with a speed never seen before in witches, another ball was formed and in the air before anyone could draw a breath. My eyes focused on it and I quickly shoved Grayson, who held onto me as we tumbled to the ground.

"Damn it Fire."

"Sorry, that was just faster than I ever saw and…"

"Save it." We both quickly got up and I frowned. "Think we can take her?"

"Honestly, no. How when she can conjure those that fast? Fire may not kill us, but it will do some major harm."

"Think we can ambush her?"

"I don't know. If we all did, that would be six to one, but how fast could she pick us off?" I chewed on my lip as I kept watching, seeing now two fire balls, but I also saw the toll it was taking on her. Whatever was going on was killing her. Wait, the insides decayed, but hers seemed to be happening faster! She wouldn't have long to live; that was a given but what carnage could she do in the mean time, was the golden question.

I glanced at Grayson as he looked at me and I shook my head, my thoughts flying. Something still felt off, but I couldn't figure out what, couldn't find it. I took his hand, though, and slowly walked further in, hearing Jo muttering in some unknown language. Tessa looked at me and shook her head, telling us to stop. But I held up my hand.

"What are you doing?" Grayson hissed in my ear.

"I want you to walk behind her and hold her while her focus is on me. You will need to use all your strength to subdue her."

"Are you crazy?"

"Yes, but I can mist if I need to, just hope its fast enough."

"I don't like this."

"I know, but something just tells me you and I are the only ones who can handle this and not get killed." I tried to smile but he quickly shook his head. He moved and after a quick breath, I nodded my head. I moved in front of her and her eyes opened wide and she started to lunge at me, screaming out, 'IT'S YOU'. I frowned but quickly reached out and decked her, which gave her a moment's pause, but she quickly recovered. Luckily, it was enough for Grayson to grab her arms and hold her. But, not fast enough for a ball to come up. We never saw her lift her arm but the ball was released. I moved as fast as I could, but the ball still grazed my arm and I screamed, my anger rising. I walked over to her and grabbed her throat.

"Fire!" I looked up at Grayson, my jaw clenched but I did not want to let go. "Release her, we need her to talk."

"I will not talk!" I looked at the witch in my hands. "You are worthless, and your power is useless against us. We will win." I frowned even more and stepped closer, but screamed as my hand quickly burned. I fell back, as did Grayson, as we watched her quickly ignite.
