4 Monsters and Heroes

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Hours Later -

"498, 499… 500!" I shakily rose from a squatting position to a standing one, with my body aching from the workout. I looked up to the sky, and noticed that the sun was setting. Though my body was aching and exhausted, I knew that my time to complete the quest was running out. Luckily, I had completed all but one of the objectives : The 50 Kilometer run. There was one problem, however : monsters. Picking up my bat, I set off to complete the run, even with the exhaustion plaguing my body.

Getting into a jogging position, I started to jog the 50 kilometers. The route I would take is : Starting at Saitama's apartment complex, I would jog to the supermarket and back approximately 5 times. A dozen minutes later, I was utterly exhausted and sprawled across the pavement, with my entire body aching. After resting for a few minutes, I picked myself back up and started jogging once more, this time with even more determination.

—---------------------------------------------------------------

3 Hours Later -

My body was burned from the stress, and I felt as if a truck was on my shoulders. I felt like just giving up, and not continuing on. I could barely breathe or even keep my eyes open, and my limbs were numb. I could see Saitama's apartment complex, however, and felt renewed vigor entering my body. 'I… I MUST MAKE IT!' With all the energy left in me, I started bolting towards the rubble.

Reaching the rubble, I dropped my bat and collapsed to the ground in exhaustion. "I *huff* made *huff* it!" I heard a "Ding!" in my head, and a purple GUI with platinum text appeared in unison.

[Daily Quest "To Become A Hero" Completed! Administering Rewards…Rewards Administered!]

I glanced at the message with a smirk, before passing out from the exhaustion.

—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next day -

I slowly stirred awake, and noticed that it was morning now. Looking over next to me, I saw my metal bat still laying beside me and picked it up with ease. 'Huh? It feels much lighter than before. Could it be… System, show me my stats!' I commanded the system, resulting in a golden GUI with platinum letters appearing in my vision.

'Now that I think about it, I can think a lot more clearly now… and I feel much stronger, faster, and durable. My body feels much more light and durable now. It must be due to [Adaptive Fighter], as I had endured enormous stress during that time via intense workouts. Though, I'm guessing that fighting produces much better results than simply working out due to my [Adaptive Fighter]. But, as I am now, I'm unprepared to come across even a tiger-level threat. For now, I'll have to stick to training! Before that, however, I need to map out my surroundings,' I decided to inspect my surroundings before doing anything else. Turning around from the rubble, I set off.

Around the apartment complex, all the shops and restaurants were ruined, with their roofs caved in. I concluded that the monster that blew a hole through the apartment complex must've also caused the destruction of the surrounding areas. Not only that, the road next to the area was in shambles, and was a mere pile of rubble now. Whilst I was progressing along the ruined road, I decided to practice my psychokinesis.

However, before I could carry out that idea, I spotted a monster wandering around. The monster appeared to be a giant red bear that stood on two legs, with sharp claws. Before I could retreat, the monster spotted me and immediately charged at me. 'Shit! System, roll the gacha now!' I commanded before preparing to block its attack, a "Ding!" echoing in my mind as a result.

I didn't have the time to read the notification, as the bear swung its claw at my right side. I managed to block it with my bat just in time, skidding a few inches from the shock. Recoiling from the attack, I launched my bat full-force at its chest. My attack, however, was intercepted and my bat was tossed away. Summoning the dual nichirin cleavers, I used the cleavers to block the swipe at both my left and right from the monster.

However, I couldn't hold them in place and had to duck under the swipes. Whilst doing that, I propelled both of my cleavers towards the bear's chest. Before they could reach, however, the monster bolted backwards. 'This is bad. It's both faster and stronger than me, and none of my attacks are working. Maybe my psy-' Suddenly, I felt a claw through my shoulder and saw two more giant red bears, with one of them stabbing me with his right claw, the other one heading for my noggin. 'FUCK! How the hell do anime characters ignore the pain?!'

Ignoring the pain coursing through my entire shoulder, I halted the incoming attack with my psychic energy for a mere second. That second, however, was enough for me to regain my ground and jump towards its head, sending my two cleavers towards its neck with surprising speed. However, before I could decapitate the bear, the other two bears attacked me. Adjusting my body, I twisted my head below the claws. Readjusting my cleavers, I propelled them towards the two bears' necks.

A pain soared from my gut, causing me to falter and miss. 'Shit! This is bad! I have suffered not only one, but TWO, injuries! This hurts like hell!' Adjusting to the circumstances, I decided to use my psychokinesis instead of using physical attacks. Blocking two more attacks from two of the bears and ducking under a right hook, I surrounded a particularly huge chunk of debris the size of my head with my psychic energy, and launched it at the right bear's head. It didn't move fast, but it would serve its purpose.

The bear caught it with ease, but this moment of distraction was critical in my victory. With all my strength, I launched BOTH of my blades spinning like a fidget spinner at its neck. Right after that, I had to dodge yet another swipe towards my abdomen from the bear behind me and one towards my head from the bear to my left. The dual cleavers spun right through its next, decapitating it. 'Good! Two enemies left!' The monster's body dropped to the ground, lifeless, causing the other monsters to become visibly pissed.

'Oh shit!' I thought right before 4 claws were heading towards my body. Luckily, I had analyzed their technique already, and with them feral now, it was easy to deduce their movements. The bad part is that they were even faster now, and I could barely react to them. However, I could feel my body improving, and my actions becoming more fluid. 'Where is this strength and speed coming from? Is this the effect of [Adaptive Fighter]? The pain… I can't feel any pain coming from my shoulder or gut anymore,'. Whilst weaving between the incoming attacks, I got closer and closer to my cleavers that laid on the ground, until I could eventually reach them.

I picked up both of the cleavers, and blocked the incoming attacks easily with them. I began spinning my blades and launched them at the monsters "Checkmate!" I exclaimed whilst grinning, before the cleavers decapitated both of them whilst spinning mid-air. Suddenly, I got hit by an onslaught of notifications in my vision.

'ONE FOR ALL?! Okay, now I'll for-sure be covered dealing with even demon-level threats if I master One For All. Though, it feels like it'll be almost too easy mastering it, with my insane growth speed. I feel confident in taking the Hero Association exams now! Wait, aren't there people guarding the border between the 'Ghost Town' and normal parts of City Z, though? Meh, I'll just go around them and practice my new power!'

Activating One For All, I felt a foreign, but welcome, energy blossom in my body. I made sure to focus most of the current energy in my legs, and tested my speed by blitzing at a nearby building that was about 15 meters away. Launching myself off the ground with my foot, I crashed into the building, which resulted in me going through the wall and onto the floor. A loud "Crash!" emanated through the streets. My pants were slightly ripped, and my legs were slightly bruised.

'What the hell?! How did I go so fast? I was by the road one second, and the next I crashed into a building! Maybe I should try allocating the energy throughout my entire body, instead of just my legs,' This time, I spread the energy throughout my entire body. After doing that, I could think much more clearly and felt a change in my body, though I couldn't pinpoint what exactly changed.

This time, when I kicked off the ground with my foot, I was able to actually keep up with how fast I was going, and planted my feet into the pavement right before I landed in the heap of rubble. 'Damn, I really need to practice my control over my body. I'll have to do that after the Hero Entrance Exam, though. Hopefully I'm able to learn to control my movements before I arrive there,' I, with my newfound power and speed, started dashing my way towards the border of 'Ghost Town'.

During the journey, I had gotten much faster from the continuous stress of using One For All on my body. When combined with my already ridiculous physical capabilities, I had been able to reach the border in a mere minute. I landed on the ground in front of the wall with a loud "Crack!" coming from the cracked ground under my feet. Disabling One For All, I decided to communicate with the border patrol.

"Hey!" I call out to the people beyond the wall, earning their attention and hostility. The border opened, revealing 5 soldiers in a V formation. "What are you! How did you get inside the city!" The soldier in the lead questioned. 'System, activate my 'Persuasion' skill!' "It's quite simple, I'm a human," I answered with a laid back tone, causing them to question me further.

"If so, how have you survived all this time? Are you a hero?" They questioned further. "It's called being strong, and I'm actually on my way to become a hero right now. It'd be nice if you could let me pass," I answered, causing suspicion to arise in the group of soldiers. They talked in hushed whispers, which I couldn't hear, before the soldier in lead shushed them and asked me to show my strength.

A grin made itself present on my face. 'Finally… time to test my strength! One For All, 15%!' Energy flowed throughout my entire body, illuminating my body with red veins appearing on my skin. I walked towards a random building, and cocked my fist back. Propelling my fist forward, I smashed the wall and blew a hole through the building, causing it to collapse. The soldiers could only stare on slack-jawed.

After a minute or so, the lead soldier regained his composure and coughed into his hand. "Well, er" "Zach" "Well Zach, you can go on," The soldiers, once they regained their composure, cleared a path for me. "By the way, where's the nearest train station?" I asked, as I wouldn't just go around jumping off buildings, when there are people who are faster than me actively on duty right now. "Er, just continue on South for about 15 miles," He answered. I thanked him before launching off the ground, disappearing from sight.

—--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5 Hours Later -

I was currently standing in line in front of a huge dome, which was testing location 6. I was currently in line for registration. Luckily, I had been able to find my wallet, which was in my right pocket. Apparently, the name of this body's owner had been 'Light Weinstein', who had been 18 before I inhabited this body. Anyways, there were a myriad of people registering in the exam, such examples being an old person and a group of people who look like they're in the WWE.

"Candidates, please form two lines for registration," A guy in a blue work outfit, who I assumed to be a member of staff, said with a megaphone pressed to his mouth. Everyone proceeded to get into two lines and enter the building. Inside the building, we had to step down some stairs and were split into groups.

My group consisted of 2 people wearing tank tops, one wearing a purple one and the other one wearing a red one, a skinny guy with a gray haircut wearing a training suit, and someone who I assumed to be a martial artist, judging from his skillful movements and muscular build.

My group went to a section with long white rectangles, which I assumed were long in order to test our running speed and stamina. We were told to replace our current attire with tank tops and weird black underwear-like things, which I and the other 2 dudes did.

"This is the 1,500 meter run! On the mark of 3, go!" Another man in blue work clothes explained to us, as he started counting down. "1!" I got into running position. "2!" I got on my 'Serious' face. "3! Go!" 'One For All, 20%!' I felt the now familiar energy blooming in my body, radiating in the form of red veins throughout my body. The other participants were shocked for a moment, but that didn't matter to me as I launched myself, full force, off the ground, cracking the ground.

In merely a few seconds, I tore through the finish line. "2.. 2.32 seconds!" The person holding the finish line called out, lifting up the stopwatch in his hands. The other candidates reached the finish line after about 10 seconds, with the martial artist having the best time out of the four of them : 10.45 seconds. After a minute or so, my entire group had finished and we moved onto the next test : Side-to-Side jumps.

Entering the next test room, It was a basic room with 5 pairs of white squares, with each pair being about 2 meters long. We were told to get in the middle of a square and wait until further instructions. "Next, we will be doing Side-to-Side jumps for 30 seconds! On the mark of 3, go!" I honestly didn't know what kind of position is best for side-to-side jumps, so I just bent down and tensed my muscles the best I could. "1!" The other candidates got into their positions. "2!" 'One For All, 25%!' "3! Go!" One For All blossomed in my body once more, along with the red veins of energy. Denting the floor with my foot, I jumped side-to-side at speeds I didn't even know I could go at. After thirty seconds, the dude told us to go to another room for the weight lifting portion.

Basically, it was just a room with some very heavy weights. With One For All still active, I picked up the biggest weight above my head with relative ease, earning me some confused and jealous looks. The only person that could relatively match my feat was the martial artist, who lifted the weight to his waist before dropping it. The next test was shot put, where you had to throw a weighted ball as far as you can.

We were led to a room with a dozen or so weighted balls on the ground. There was a rectangle with curved lines painted on the ground, where we had to stand at the end and throw it as far as we could. When it was my turn, I decided to use 30% of One For All. 'One For All, 30%!' Once more, the energy blossomed in my body and took on the form of red veins of pure energy, with me focusing all of the energy into my arms. "Serious Throw!" I shouted, cocking my hand back and propelling the ball forward. In just a second, the ball had made its way wedged into the wall.

Getting out of their shocked state, they continued onto the test : Vertical Jumping. We were escorted into another room, which had something akin to something you'd use to measure height, but much taller, going to 30 feet. Once it was my turn, I was easily able to jump to my ceiling, and actually got my head stuck in the ceiling. The next test was basically how many whack-a-moles you could whack in one minute, and was what I assumed to be a test of reaction speed. I, of course, aced this test as well, and actually broke the machine. Luckily, I was the last one to go.

Then there was the last test until the written portion : The Punching Machine. In front of me was a reinforced titanium-plated machine, with some complicated machinery backing it up. Beside it was a counter showing off how powerful, in pounds of force, the punch was, which was attached to a circular device.

This time, I used 100% of One For All, and the same process occurred, but being much more intense. Cocking my fist back, I concentrated all of One For All into solely my right arm. I propelled my fist towards the machine with my full power. The instant it touched the machine, the machine got launched through the divider wall and into the actual wall, actually cracking it a good bit. The machine was completely devastated.

However, I could feel that several bones in my arm had broken from using such a high amount of One For All, and I had to go to the nurse or whatever. I assured them it was fine, though, and was able to go to the written portion of the exam. After sitting down, the exams were passed out, which consisted of 20 questions, 10 on each side. The questions consisted mostly of 'What do you do in X situation', but the last question was a bit harder than the rest. It asked me to write a full essay on what to do if I were to encounter a dragon-level threat.

After I turned in the essay, we got our results back. I opened my results up to find that I was placed in
