Wishes

Conversation around the dinner table flowed more smoothly than Eden would have expected. Troy never spoke to her directly—he was probably still feeling awkward—but his parents were very inclusive. 

Jonah got his free dessert as predicted and sat there frozen as some employees sang a Brazilian birthday song. She couldn't help but laugh. Not knowing what to do when people were singing happy birthday to you was a universal struggle. 

She ended up following their cars back to the Wheeler house, which was in a fairly nice neighborhood in a part of town she was unfamiliar with. All of her friends lived in apartments so she didn't know much about houses in the area. 

The living room was full of family photos and it was clear that Jonah hadn't always been as camera shy as he was now. When he was younger, his whole face was visible and the burns seemed much more severe. Those must have been taken before some of his surgeries.
