3 Chapter 2

The Council of the Dutch East Indies had just named Vice Chairman F.N. Nieuwenhuyzen as the Government Commissioner for Aceh, and Major General J.H.R. Kohler as the commander of the first military expedition to Aceh. The news had reached the governor's palace, and Governor-General van den Bosch summoned his trusted advisors to discuss the matter.

"Gentlemen, we are about to embark on a mission that will secure our position in the East Indies," Gouverneur-Generaal James Loudon announced. "Aceh is a thorn in our side, and we cannot tolerate their disobedience any longer."

"But sir, isn't this a bit extreme?" asked one of the advisors. "We have a treaty with Aceh that they have violated, but isn't there a diplomatic solution to this?"

"Diplomacy has failed, and we cannot allow Aceh to continue to defy our authority," replied the Governor-General firmly. "We have appointed Commissioner Nieuwenhuyzen to negotiate with the sultan, but if that fails, we must be prepared to use force."

"But sir, have we considered the consequences of this action?" asked another advisor. "The Acehnese are fierce warriors, and they will not go down without a fight. This could escalate into a full-blown war, and we may not be able to handle it."

"I understand your concerns, but we have no choice," the Governor-General said resolutely. "We must show them that we mean business and that we will not tolerate any rebellion or defiance. We have the superior firepower, and we will use it if necessary."

A few days later, Nieuwenhuyzen arrived in Aceh and sent a letter to the sultan, asking him to recognize Dutch sovereignty. However, the sultan's reply did not mention what the Dutch wanted, and Nieuwenhuyzen sent a second letter, which was ignored.

"This is outrageous," Nieuwenhuyzen exclaimed to his aide. "The sultan is clearly defying our authority, and we cannot let this stand. We must take action."

"Yes, sir," replied the aide. "But what if he doesn't back down? What if he refuses to acknowledge Dutch sovereignty?"

"Then we have no choice but to declare war," Nieuwenhuyzen said grimly. "We have the backing of the Council, and we must show the Acehnese that we mean business."

And so, on March 26, 1873, the Dutch declared war on Aceh, with Major General Kohler leading the military expedition.

In the palace of the Sultan of Aceh, tension was high as news of the Dutch government's ultimatum reached the council chamber. The Sultan, surrounded by his advisors and commanders, listened intently to the report from his emissaries in Singapore.

"The Dutch are demanding our submission," one of the emissaries said. "They want us to recognize their sovereignty over our land and people."

The Sultan furrowed his brow. "And if we refuse?"

"Then they will declare war," another emissary replied.

The room fell silent as the gravity of the situation sunk in. The Sultan's advisors whispered among themselves, debating their options.

"We cannot submit to the Dutch," the Sultan said firmly. "Our sovereignty must be protected at all costs."

"But Your Majesty, the Dutch have a powerful army and navy," one advisor said. "We cannot hope to match their strength in battle."

"Then we must seek allies," another advisor suggested. "Perhaps the British or French could help us."

The Sultan nodded thoughtfully. "Yes, we must explore all possible avenues. But for now, we must prepare for war."

The council chamber was filled with a sense of urgency as orders were issued to prepare the defenses of the kingdom. Soldiers were called up from all corners of the land and trained to fight with whatever weapons they had. The people were informed of the impending war and urged to remain strong in the face of adversity.

Days turned into weeks, and tensions continued to mount as the Dutch ships drew closer to the shores of Aceh. The Sultan and his advisors worked tirelessly to come up with a strategy to defend their land and people.

"It is clear that we cannot match the Dutch in a straight fight," the Sultan said. "We must use guerrilla tactics to wear them down and strike at their weaknesses."

"But how do we find their weaknesses, Your Majesty?" one advisor asked.

"We must gather intelligence," the Sultan replied. "We need to know their plans and movements so that we can plan our attacks accordingly."

As the Dutch ships approached, the palace was a hive of activity as soldiers and commanders made their final preparations. The air was thick with tension and uncertainty as the people of Aceh braced themselves for the coming storm.

While the palace was busy preparing for war, Daud was in his princely chamber sat cross-legged on the floor. His eyes fixed on the translucent screen before him.

Meanwhile, one of the palace guards walked into the room, noticing Daud's intense focus on the air. "My prince, what are you doing?" he asked.

Daud quickly minimized the projection. "Oh, nothing, just wondering to decide what toy to play," he replied, gesturing to the pile of toys in the corner of the room.

The guard nodded, satisfied with the answer. "The palace is preparing for war, my prince. You should be careful and stay in your chambers."

Daud nodded, trying to hide his excitement. "Yes, of course. I will stay here and play with my toys."

As the guard left the room, Daud turned back to the projection. He had a mission to complete, and he was determined to defend his land against the Dutch, even if he had to do it alone.
