Chapter 8: Did She just scam him ?
When the Magic Knight announced Ben as the winner in the duel, there was a pin-drop silence that filled the atmosphere. The crowd looked back and forth between where the noble guy stood a while ago and the wall he crashed into after receiving the punch from Ben.
Ben moved out of the ring and stood leaning against the wall of the arena, not caring about the gazes around him.
One Magic Knight from Golden Dawn came near the examinee and challenged Ben, whose half of his body was stuck to the wall and had fainted.
With an expressionless face, he pulled the examinee from the wall and placed him on the ground.
There was a high-degree burn on the face of the examinee. His skin was burned to the extent that it turned a deep red and some of his inner skin was visible.
"Wind Magic: Healing Breeze."
The Magic Knight opened his grimoire and cast a healing spell on the examinee, placing his hand near the burn wound on the face.
His palm lightly glowed in a light green, and a gentle stream of wind with a visible green color breezed over the examinee's face. When the breeze fell on him, his face showed a relaxed expression, and the burned skin started to heal at a rate visible to the naked eye.
Every examinee in the arena looked at the healing spell cast by the Magic Knight with wide eyes and curiosity.
Ben looked at the scene without taking his eyes away. He was witnessing something that was not possible to see in his previous life. After a minute of healing, the examinee's skin was healed as if it had never been burned.
'Healing magic, huh... Even though it's not an advanced type of healing, it looks amazing seeing it live.' Ben observed the process without averting his gaze.
After getting healed, the nobleman didn't come near Ben. He was standing far away, not making any eye contact.
"Monster... monster... monster..." were the only words that spilled from his mouth.
'Funny guy. He is calling Heatblast scary. What will happen when he comes in contact with Ghostfreak? Hehe~' Ben smirked, looking at the scared guy.
Suddenly, the noble guy shivered.
The combat test resumed, and the examinees started to fight among themselves to show their worth to the Magic Knight captains.
The captains in the captain's stand started to note the candidates suitable for their squads.
After nearly 3 hours, the final combat test was completed. Every examinee looked very tense while waiting for their results.
Williams stood up from his position and walked towards the front of the stand.
"THAT CONCLUDES THE EXAM. NOW WHEN YOUR NUMBERS ARE CALLED, PLEASE STEP FORWARD TO LEARN YOUR RESULTS," Williams announced.
"IF A CAPTAIN WANTS YOU IN HIS OR HER SQUAD, THEY WILL RAISE THEIR HAND. THEN YOU ARE IN. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO JOIN THE SQUAD, YOU ARE FREE TO DECLINE," Charlotte continued after Williams with a cold voice, looking at the examinees.
"IF YOU ARE ADMITTED IN MORE THAN ONE SQUAD, THE EXAMINEE MAY CHOOSE WHICH SQUAD TO JOIN," Charlotte said the last part, eyeing Ben with a faint blush on her face, which turned into a normal cold face within a second.
"HOWEVER!!! IF NO SQUAD CHOOSES YOU, YOU MAY NOT JOIN THE MAGIC KNIGHTS," Fuegoleon stated the rules for the examinees who were not selected by the captains of the Magic Knight squads.
"IN WHICH CASE, LEAVE AT ONCE," Nozel declared after Fuegoleon.
Hearing the declaration of the captains, the examinees felt pressure because this was the result that could change their lives.
"NOW, EXAMINEE NO:1, STEP FORWARD," one of the Magic Knights came before the assembled examinees and called the first examinee according to their number.
Examinee number 1 stepped forward with a worried smile on his face. He cursed himself for being the first to be called out. He looked at the captain's stand where all the captains were viewing them.
Every examinee looked at the captains, waiting for the results. After a few minutes, not a single captain raised their hand, looking indifferent.
"I can't believe the first one among us is not selected," examinees started to whisper in low voices among themselves with nervousness.
"EXAMINEE NO: 1, YOU ARE NOT SELECTED. NEXT... EXAMINEE NO: 2, STEP FORWARD," the Magic Knight called the next examinee.
A beautiful teen girl stepped forward. She wore a commoner's dress, but she had a charm like a royal about her with golden hair and unique features, such as her eyes, which were an ocean blue-purple.
'Perfect ups and downs, huh...' Ben looked at her, giving her a thumbs up in his mind.
The girl looked at the stand without any nervousness or confidence. After a minute, three captains raised their hands.
"EXAMINEE NO: 2, YOU HAVE BEEN CHOSEN BY THREE CAPTAINS: CAPTAIN OF SILVER EAGLE, CAPTAIN NOZEL SELVIA; CAPTAIN OF BLUE ROSE, CAPTAIN CHARLOTTE ROSELEI; CAPTAIN OF CORAL PEACOCK, CAPTAIN DORATHY UNSWORTH."
"NOW CHOOSE THE SQUAD YOU ARE WILLING TO JOIN," the Magic Knight announced the result.
Everyone in the examinee area looked at the teen girl with awe because three captains were willing to give her a place in their squad.
"I choose Blue Rose," the girl said her decision, looking at Charlotte with admiration.
After telling her decision, she was escorted to the other side of the arena.
"NEXT EXAMINEE NO: 3..."
The selection process continued in order.
Among them, 2 were selected by Golden Dawn, 3 by Purple Orca, 2 by Crimson Lion, 4 by Azure Deer Squad, 2 by Silver Eagle, 8 by Green Mantis, and no one was selected by Black Bulls.
Yami did not rise for any of the examinees so far because he did not feel any...
"NEXT EXAMINEE NO: 88, STEP FORWARD," the Magic Knight called Ben to step forward.
'Finally,' Ben walked forward, waiting for his result eagerly.
When the captains in the captain's stand noticed Ben was the one who was walking forward, they all became eager.
Except for Golden Dawn, every captain in the stand raised their hand. Seeing this scene, everyone present in the arena was shocked because this was the first time out of 8 captains, 7 chose to raise their hand.
'I know that I impressed them with his transformation, but why does it look like Williams hates me? Did I provoke him or the one inside him?' Ben shifted his gaze to the captains.
'Green Mantis and Purple Orca are out of the question because one is guarding a prison and another one, hmm... I don't like the name.'
'No Silver Eagle because really, among them, many were hated commenters. So they won't allow me to rise in rank.'
'Crimson Lion was a good choice, but after Golden Dawn, many elves' souls reside in the members of Crimson Lion... who knows what will happen when their leader considers me a threat and wants to eliminate me earlier.'
'Even though I don't fear them, it's better to be cautious.'
'Black Bulls, Azure Deer, Coral Peacock are good picks. Including Blue Rose, but will they allow me to enter their squad?'
"I choose Blac..." Ben was in deep thought when he was about to say his choice.
"Ben, if you choose Blue Rose, you might be able to utilize good resources without any restrictions because there are not that many men in our squad, you see," Charlotte interrupted with a sweet voice of hers, which stunned others.
'Did she just call him by his name? That means they are already acquainted,' other captains looked at Charlotte, who was ignoring them and giving her the best charming smile to make Ben select Blue Rose.
"Do you still remember me?" Ben asked her with an energetic voice because until now he thought she didn't know him.
"How can I forget..."
Cough...
"Yes, I remember," she answered with a kind face.
"Then I choose yo..."
Cough...
"I mean, I choose Blue Rose," Ben declared his decision with a wide smile.
Hearing his decision, Charlotte became very happy. When she was about to go down to meet the new member of her squad, she coughed.
"Did she just scam him?" Jack whispered to Yami, who was sitting next to him.
"Yeah, even though there are men in their squad, they were all used for cleaning or other pity work, not for the main job," Yami answered Jack in a low voice.
Hearing them, Charlotte turned her face towards them, but there was no trace of the kind woman before. Her smile sent shivers down their spines.
