The only way aside from completing the quest would be to die from age. However should you return to heaven without completing the quest would there still be someone to call you? The soul will only be stuck in the heaven. It's peace eternal yet unvarying and this constance is what bears a longing for change. Of course nothing is more tempting for a soul than to go back to the mortal plane where they could choose to be something they want through the help of these quests. It's a mutual benefit between the deities and themselves. Unless they want to be contractless and be brought down to the world without guidance.
