If your life is dear to you

Because there are already lost battles. Vanessa Carpenter faces this fact at the end of her last school holiday. Yet she has a life that fits into the film: wealth, prosperity, family and friends. What else should she want? Just enough to make your dreams come true. But the two by no means go together, and Vanessa is forced to make a difficult decision. Tyler Moore is already a man and fully agrees with the statement. His life is less dreamy. His parents died, his wife left her, and she gave birth to another man's child, and his sisters left the broken family home as soon as they could. Plus, everyone wants to blame him for all that. When he wants to step out of the role of the on-duty scapegoat, suddenly everyone starts clinging to him with the teeth and nails. Fate now, for once, seems to be in the right place at the right time. It pleases the two unfortunates and helps them. As a bonus package, saddle them together.

I am sitting in the back seat of a car again. Not alone, but with a 18-year-old girl again. The similarity ends here, because there isn't any happy thought, like yesterday. The girl beside me is sitting without saying a word. What would she say? I broke her arm. I don't how it happened. Her arm is broken. The nurse in the school temporarily fixed the broken arm, and Peter immediately brought the car to get Vanessa Carpenter to the nearest hospital, as soon as possible. It doesn't seem to be a good idea, because I misjudged Peters' driving skills. He finds every hump and pothole in the road.

Vanessa Carpenter is in pain. She doesn't say a word, but it is visible: her eyes are closed, teeth are gritting, and her skin is white and shiny from sweat. She shakes every upheaval of the car. I wish I could choke my fiance. He should be more careful in these situations. Well, he is hurry, and he is a man, and he doesn't know how to be careful. I hope he will drive the same way with me, when I will give life to our child. He always makes everything with all out, this is one of his charming feature.

The emergency ward of the hospital is very slow. It takes almost three hours to get a doctor to see Vanessa's arm. I am not allowed to accompany her to the examination room, so when the nurse closes the door in front of me, I walk back to Peter, and sit down.

"It is not your fault."

"Whose fault is it after all?"

Peter is unable to answer, we both know the truth.

"I have never seen someone to brake an arm without such a little effort. May I start to afraid of you?"

"If you cheat me, well, I think it is worth considering."

We both laugh on the idea, and wait patiently. It is not a bad thing, when you are able to nuzzle to your love. Comfortable feeling.

More than an hour later later Vanessa Carpenter comes out to the examination room. Her left arm is plastered, but her face is more colorful, than before.

"Leave me alone!" She cries furiously, when we hurry to her.

The ripost is on the tip of my tongue, but I swallow back. I have to. I am the adult here, Vanessa Carpenter is just a child, a student.

"Could we call your parents?" Peter asks, but the girl just immovably shrug her shoulder.

"If you want..."

She doesn't care about us, her parents, or anything at all, because she walks toward the entrance, without paying regard to Peter and me.

"Hey, where do you plan to go?" I stop her, grasping her right, unhurt arm.

"Home. Do you want to brake my other arm too?"

I release her arm, like it would be a hot iron. No, I don't want to break her arm, I didn't even want to break the other one.

"If you want, please do it now. I am full with pain-killers, so it would be more comfortable, than without drugs."

I can't stand this girl. Definitely. I don't what other people admires in her, but she is an arrogant little bi..baby. There is no wonder that her life is full of hardness. All of them is caused by her irritating personality.

"Let's wait for your parents. Headmaster already sent them a note."

She let out a big sigh, but turns back, and obediently sit down.

I count on two angry parents to come and bring me to book for their precious little daughter's injury, but no one comes. An hour later I ask Peter to check his phone again, but he confirms that his message has already reached the Carpenter parents. Vanessa Carpenter sits in her seat calm, her eyes are closed. No, she doesn't sleep, just rests. Another hour later she suddenly stands up, and without saying a word, storms out from the hospital.

We are running after her, just to realize, that she has got on a bus. Without money, or ticket, or anything else!

"Get the car, and follow the bus." I order Peter.

I am angry. Who does she think she is? A haughty girl, like this one, deserves every hardness she has in her life!

Although I can't let her wandering alone, full with painkillers. The first car would kill her in no time. Well, I wouldn't mind it, but I have to consider Sylvia's wish to get along with the Carpenters. Sylvia has never asked anything, but this, and what am I doing on the first day? Break their daughter's arm. Moreover I lose her in a foreign city after she is treated with strong medication. It is not my day.

"Don't you think, she knows, what she is doing?" Peter asks, when we reach the bus by car.

"Follow the bus. She will be in trouble, in no time, when somebody asks her ticket. We are responsible for her, after all."

Several bus stops later we arrive to a secluded place with a small traffic circle. Vanessa Moore gets off the bus, waits, while the vehicle leave the place, and start walking beside the road.

"Hey, we will bring you home. Get on." I invite her, and force my voice to be friendly.

She doesn't responds, just continues walking. It is me, who can't bear the tension. I get out of the car, grab her shoulder, and start to pull her toward the back seat.

The next minute I face hurts.

This little bi...baby has hit me a clip!

I slosh to her stomach, it is a conditioned reflex, but something is off. She doesn't harden her muscles. My fist smoothly glides into her stomach, as I could pull out her intestines. In the next moment, the girl falls down to the ground. Slowly, like a leaf in autumn. When Peter arrives to us, she is already unconscious.

What have I done again?

It must be said, it is easier to deal with the unconscious Vanessa Carpenter, although Peter has to carry her to her room, in the Carpenter mansion. I already knew, the the family is rich, but their home is unbelievably beautiful! A maid shows the way to Vanessa Carpenter's room. Her room is furnished in a fine, moderate way, every woman would be head over heels to live here. Me too. The maid asks us to leave the room, and she starts to undress the still unconscious girl, I really hope, that she just fallen asleep.

A butler comes, and asks us to follow him to the dining room, where the family is. I become a little bit self-conscious, when we arrive there, because the dining room turns out to be small ball room, with a big table. The Carpenter family is waiting for us. The parents are jovial, middle-aged couple, and two boys. One is around Taylor's age, the other is smaller, 10 or 12 years old. They look at us so friendly, that I feel like I would have known them for a thousand years.

We just start to explain the latest events, but the father cuts into our explaining.

"First of all, please, take a seat, and have dinner with us!"

"I suppose you didn't eat dinner because of our daughter."

The mother smiles at us, and her invitation is so warm, that we can't refuse. The food is extremely delicious, maybe it has been made by a professional chef. We don't talk about Vanessa Carpenter, but every Carpenter is bombing us with questions. They are interested in me, and Peter. Where do I come from, what do I like, how did we met, how was the university. The youngest is a bit disappointed, when I tell him, that I am the new PE teacher, he prefers economical studies. I haven't been in such a normal, warm, welcoming family, since my parents died.

"Speaking about Vanessa." Mr. Carpenter starts with the unpleasant topic. "We are very thankful for driving her home. Although we wanted to teach her a lesson, not going to her."

"That girl is too immersed in the martial arts." The mother explains."We should be thankful to you to brake her arm. It will give her time, to be concerned with her social life. She needs wider horizonts than just always doing training. She doesn't have friends among the girls, and never had a boyfriend. It somehow makes a mother a bit sad."

"We have already discuss, that doing something with Vanessa's social life, but everything we tried was just in vain. So don't be embarrassed, you give us a good opportunity to lead back our daughter into the normal life."

A maid comes, and tell us, that Vanessa Carpenter is awake, so I ask her parents' permission to visit her. She is not in her bed. Before I could ask her whereabouts, I hear some ugly sounds of vomiting from a door, which covers a small bathroom. Small? Our whole room was smaller among the hills, than this one. A pale, tottery Vanessa Carpenter comes out of, and goes to her bed. I feel some guilt, because probably my punch is the main cause of her vomit. The guilt vanish, as soon as she starts to send me to the deepest hell.

I fed up. Enough is enough. Her parents were right, in their polite way they gave us explanation about their unbearable daughter. She has everything to be happy: money, social status, caring family. I would have give anything for such circumstances. She…

I put Morishita-san's letter to the night-stand, next to Vanessa Carpenter, and leave the room.
