6 Chapter 5

What was Sam's position in the world?

All those years trying to appeal to the main heroine, so that in the end someone else could just come and take her away.

He basically was a nobody.

A mob character, who did not need to have a happy ending, or even an ending.

The world did not care what a mob character would feel. They would eventually be thrown out of the main storyline anyway. Many would soon fade into nonexistence like their predecessors, and that process of erasing would repeat itself over and over again, until the end of the story. There were tons of people like Sam in the past, and there would be more of them in the future. The Cycle was there, and would be there long after everything. As long as Hero was getting the needed development, sacrifices would be given.

The young man was simply a meaningless grain of sand in the vast desert with the only oasys that is the Hero.

Sam was heartbroken.

Unmistakably, he was shocked by the scene.

It was difficult seeing the people you love walking hand in hand with someone else, even more devastating when seeing them kissing someone else so lovingly.

At that moment, Sam realized why people would kill when they saw their significant other sleeping with another person. That heart-wrenching feeling was stronger than any type of rage anyone could ever feel.

Still, Sam was not Marie's boyfriend. What she was doing technically should mean absolutely nothing to an outsider like him.

His static mind slowly formed two outcomes in this situation. Having the love of his life stolen away, there was now a dilemma. Should he let it go and give up the love of ten or something years or should he try and make things right again.

Sam was obsessed, so he immediately chose the second one.

What could be done by now? Marie was already gone. Her eyes only had the images of that person. Sam knew who the other person was. Hero, the hope for this country to win something meaningful in the next War.

A perfect, magnificent prodigy.

The man who wins. That was his title.

What did Sam have to offer Marie that she should be with him instead of Hero?

Thinking about that, the young man went deeper into depression.

Marie planned the whole thing.

Throughout all these last months, she knew that Sam had been following her, she knew that he was waiting for her every day be it cold or warm. His figure was always around when she just looked to the side. Food and snacks were always on her table where she would sit. It was getting on her nerves. Marie was afraid that Hero might misunderstand her.

The young guy could not just take a hint. Such an annoyance, she thought.

One day, Marie overheard something really interesting.

There was a particular reserved spot in their school for the statue of the Goddess of Love. Although it was called a 'spot', it was a beautiful garden full of flowers and plants. It was an ideal place for couples to hang out. Marie heard that if a couple managed to become together right in front of the statue, their lives would be tied together for good.

Upon hearing such a good rumor, Marie was already calling Hero to that point. Even though their relationship had gone past that point by a huge margin, she still wanted to have a little blessing from the Goddess.

On the way there, she purposefully showed Sam her figure for him to follow. It was about damn time, she thought.

She wanted to get him to leave her for good. With that, it should be enough for Sam.

The young man should either leave her alone with her life, or she would deal with his corpse later.

Marie's eyes flashed signs of cruelty.

If Sam was not an acquaintance of her, she would have dealt with him a long time ago. Any promises in the past were for kids, not for the current Marie.

A simple plan, but it worked wonders. Sam followed her to the garden, she kissed the Hero and then confessed her love again, under the observation of the statue.

After the long kiss, Marie told Hero to go and wait. Waiting for a couple of minutes until his back figure was long gone, she signaled her hand towards Sam.

The last thing to do today would be to deliver Sam his rejection notice.

In order to create the main character, it was essential to have conflicts. Be it small or large, conflicts were the necessary fuel to drive the story forward.

Hero has only been to the Academy for a couple of months. Even though he was pretty famous already, there was nothing special happening. His whole story was at a stalemate while it should be showing actions and adventures. The observers needed someone to be the first arc of his conquest, the first pawn, if one may describe it.

This was where Sam would come into play. His time has come at last. The stage was almost done with the preparation.

Fear, doubts, regrets, all the negative emotions filled his mind with ease.

But his current grief was not enough. The forces of the world would like to push it a little further. His role as a mob still had a good effect. Sam had to go with a bang.

If the Hero was trying to take his love away from him, then it would make total sense to kill the bastard off.

That was what Sam was thinking.

His pupils began to turn dark. Looking at them, one could only feel a sense of dread and demise. A swirling vortex of the abyss.

Right on the next day, Sam did an unthinkable thing.

"I challenge you to a duel, Hero!"

The pawn made his first move.
