49 Discharged

The tension in the air was chocking. Father and son were locked in an epic staring contest while Jurg was watching everything from the side. He didn't know why producers spent millions paying actors and actresses to say their lines, this was an Oscar worthy performance that was playing out in front of him.

"You don't mean what you said" Chris said after what seemed like an eternity of silence.

"I do" Omari replied. His gaze didn't waver in the slightest as they locked with his father's.

He had just disrespected and defied his father inside that hospital room but he didn't care. He'd do it again. He wouldn't allow anyone to get in the way of him and playing football.

Jurg who had been watching all this while didn't seem to notice the tension in the atmosphere. He let out a soft chuckle and spoke. "At least this one has some balls down there, unlike his father who was a complete pussy heh, heh!"

After he said those words, something remarkable happened. Father and son who were engaged in an epic staring contest moments before broke the connection and turned to face Jurg.

"Would you please shut your fucking mouth?!" They shouted at Jurg in unison.

The slight exercise of his vocal and pulmonary organs caused Omari to wince in pain.

"You know, I don't have any control over your father but I do over you" Jurg said to Omari. "Two matches on the bench when you get back"

"If he gets back" Chris put emphasis on the word 'if'.

"When I get back" Like his father, Omari put emphasis on the first word of his sentence.

Once again, father and son were locked in an epic staring contest. This time though, it didn't last long, Omari broke contact.

"Look, I'm sorry for what I said. I admit I was scummy but I can't let you take my dreams away from me. Football is everything to me, without it, I'm nothing" Omari said while looking down.

Chris said. "I understand that but you have to look at things from my point of view. I'm just a concerned father who wants his son to be safe"

Omari scoffed. "Sure, I'll be safe, but at what cost?" His question caused Chris to open his mouth as if he wanted to answer, but then he closed it back. "I'll just be a hateful person who despises his father for forcing him to leave his dreams behind, just because he can 'be safe' over an incident that has a near zero chance of happening again. Football didn't put my life in danger, it was poor adult supervision from Jurg. Surely you don't want me to grow up and feel for you what you feel for your dad, do you?"

Chris stared at Omari for a few seconds. His eyes moist with tears that were threatening to fall out. "No" He said with a hoarse voice while looking at Omari. "I don't want you to hate me the way I hate my dad". Chris heaved a sigh. "I promise not to stand in the way of you and football"

Omari smiled after he heard his father's response. Chris walked over to the bed and hugged the son tenderly.

The ideal father-son moment was spoiled by a bystander whose existence had been forgotten by the pair who were hugging each other.

"Now that everything has been sorted out" Jurg said. "Omari you're given a two week holiday to fully recover from the accident"

"We're having a moment here Jurg, so I suggest that you stop behaving like the senseless prick you are and please bugger off!" Chris snapped at him. He turned to Omari and realized immediately that he didn't have any luck at all.

The pair gave him a death stare which made him rub his nose awkwardly. No matter how shameless he was, he wasn't shameless enough to linger in the room afterwards.

"You know what? We'll talk about this some other time" He laughed awkwardly and left the room.

"Okay, so the doctor says that you should be discharged later today. Thankfully, you don't have any form of infections or the likes, you just got beaten up real bad" Chris said.

"Those two robbers got lucky. If they didn't catch me by surprise then I would have beaten them to a bloody pulp" Omari said even though he knew that there wasn't an ounce of truth in what he just said.

Even though there was no reason to feel embarrassed about being robbed, Omari still wasn't completely at home with the idea of telling everyone that he was beaten to a pulp by a pair of small time robbers.

"Sure, I'm sure that you would've shown them who's boss" Chris said sarcastically.

"No! I'm actually serious. I would've beaten the shit out of them" Omari said, making his dad chuckle.

Chris didn't want to enlighten his son to the fact that they would have gunned him down before he could even raised his hand to throw a punch.

The pair continued talking and laughing with each other until the doctor showed up. It was as if they weren't just involved in a big fight that threatened the end of their relationship.

The doctor discharged him shortly and his dad helped him to the reception where his mother and Ayanfe were waiting for him.

After a few exchange of words, they all headed to Omari's house.
