At Death's Door

Toby Robinson suddenly wakes up on a hospital bed, and the first thing he did was scream at the top of his lungs. His body was in a great deal of pain, almost like he had broken every bone in his body.

Toby Robinson: Aaaaaaah! It hurts! It hurts! What's happening to me?! (Toby screamed in pain as he thrashed about, removing the I.V drip that was injected into his body)

Two nurses rush into the room, holding Toby down to prevent him from hurting himself. Soon after the doctor enters the room, accompanied by two guards who came to check on the situation.

Doctor: I can't believe he's awake. Hold him still, I'll give him a sedative! (The doctors orders, grabbing a syringe to use)

Sarah Robinson: Toby no! Please stop! (Sarah said in tears as she rushes into the room, but is grabbed by security guards before she can reach her son)

Doctor: I'm sorry ma'am, but you can't be in here right now. Please take her away. (The doctor instructed the guards who held the hysterical Sarah in place)

Sarah Robinson: No! Let go of me! He's my son, I need to stay with him! (Sarah screams as she is forcefully taken away by the two men)

Doctor: You're going to be okay, kid. But first you need to sleep. (The doctor said as he injected Toby with the sedative)

Toby Robinson: It hurts!... It, hurts so much... (Toby said before slowly drifting away in a deep deep sleep)

Doctor: (Sighs) Fix that drip back up again, and make sure he's comfortable. He's been through a lot. (The doctor said before leaving Toby in the care of two capable nurses)

Toby wakes up a couple hours later, but now the intense pain had left him, and he felt relieved. Toby turns to see his mother sitting by his side, with her eyes obviously tired from all the tears she must have shed.

Toby Robinson: Mom. (Toby said weakly)

Sarah Robinson: Toby, you're okay. You're really okay. (Sarah said as she held Toby's hand, with a look of pure joy on her face)

Toby Robinson: What happened? (Toby asked, wondering why he was in a hospital)

Sarah Robinson: (Sniffles) I heard you coughing, so I came to check up on you. But when I saw you, you were coughing up blood, and no matter what I did, you wouldn't wake up. I was so scared, so I called an ambulance. They told me that you were suffering from extreme levels of dehydration and malnutrition. I- I told them you were fine, but at the same time you weren't... Toby, they can't give me any logical explanation as to why you suddenly got so sick. Is there something you want to tell me? You can tell me now, and I swear I won't be mad. (Sarah asked after her teary explanation)

Toby Robinson: I'm so sorry mom. (Toby said)

Sarah Robinson: Sorry for what? What did you do, what did you take?! (Sarah asks earnestly)

Toby Robinson: I didn't take anything!... I'm just sorry for making you worry so much. This, shouldn't have happened. (Toby explained sadly)

Sarah Robinson: What do you mean shouldn't have happened? Did you have something to do with what happened to you?! (Sarah asked worriedly)

Toby Robinson: I don't know, all I do know is that I'm going to be taking better care of myself. So something like this never happens again. (Toby said firmly)

Sarah Robinson: (Sighs) I don't understand anything, but I'm not gonna pry any further. All I want is for you to be happy and healthy.

Toby Robinson: And I will be, I promise! (Toby tells her)

Sarah Robinson: Okay. (Sarah said before she gently kissed Toby's forehead)... I love you sweety. (Sarah said with a warm smile)

Toby Robinson: I love you too, mom. (Toby replied with a smile)... Where's Billy? (Toby finally asked)

Sarah Robinson: He's at the Cruise's place. He wanted to come but, I didn't let him. (Sarah explains)

Toby Robinson: That's good... How long am I going to be here? (Toby asked)

Sarah Robinson: A day or two. The doctors said they just need to run a couple more tests on you, to make sure you're okay to be discharged. (Sarah explained)

Toby Robinson: Then can I get some books?! I need something to pass the time while I'm here. (Toby asked)

Sarah Robinson: You always did like to read when you were sick. (Chuckles) Okay then, Action or Fantasy? (Sarah asked with a smile)

Toby Robinson: You know I like a little bit of both. (Toby replied with a smile of his own)

Sarah Robinson: I'll run to the bookstore right now... Take care. (Sarah said before she left the room)

Toby Robinson: (Sighs) Alright Dream System. Let's see what you've got for me. (Toby say before a screen appeared before him)
