I Am Your Clock!

This novel is in the Webnovel Spirity Awards 2023 competition for ML: New Tropes: Unique Systems and Kingdom Building. Updated every day ——— I was like you once, but now I am in some place. What is this place? Why is it all black, but I can still see myself? Where am I? Who am I? Am I still the person who I think I am? Am I Matthias the Human? Or… am I something else?

———

"Of course, she won't recover immediately," I tell the child. "I can only heal the disease, she is still weak until she regathers her strength."

But even then, you could still see her face regaining color, although she still continued panting in pain.

"Thank you, Father Garcia!"

I bring my hands together. "Now, let us sit in prayer to the God that saved her life, Quinn, The God of Life!"

I close my eyes, and so does the child, as this is now a common thing for the people to do whenever I save someone. They don't have a choice, either really, since I don't ask for pay.

I don't need money, after all.

All I have to do is keep sustaining this body with Life Mana, after all.

I smile, despite the fact that we are in prayer. 'It doesn't matter, the kid won't notice, his eyes are closed!'

"May the God of Life bless us." I end the prayer for the kid.

"May… the God of Life bless us." He paused for a moment, as if he didn't fully understand.

"I must go, now, alright child?"

"Thank you, Father Garcia!" He waved goodbye.

Immediately as I leave the tent, I sigh.

'System! When do I get my next skill!'

(Answer: The System does not have to tell you that.)

I get angry quickly. 'I've gotten every single person in every single Tipi here to worship me! What else do you need!'

(Answer: The System does not have to tell you that.)

"Ugh!"

I look around, for anything, anyone that I can convert to my new religion.

'There's smoke coming from the woods.' I spot.

'Smoke means fire, and fire likely means people!'

I smile as the people start to quiet down a little. "Maz, it's your turn."

"Eh?" He looks around at me, and points at himself.

"Yes, you! We spent almost an hour on these speeches!"

He looks down, then steps forward in front of me.

"Hello, friends and family. I'm Maz!" He rose his hand in the air.

"Now, I may not have something as grand or as amazing as what Lord Matthias had to say, but I do have to say this."

"I realized something in the short time I spent with him. He's kind, he's reasonable, and most of all, he understands what is necessary and what's not, even if I don't fully understand. If I don't understand, he is willing to take time out to explain to me."

"I may not have a lot to say, but I can say this."

"As a resident of this village, and the Apostle of Matthias, he can be trusted."

As Maz finished his short speech, clapping was heard, alongside relieved expressions from a fair amount of people.

'I guess having a local tell them that I can be trusted is extremely reassuring, huh?' "Koshia?"

Maz stepped back as Koshia stepped forward.

"Hello, everyone. I am Koshia. I am the Pope of Time."

"We do not care if you have a problem with me being a woman."

This quickly stunned a lot of people, including me, but I composed myself as I agreed with her.

"I was appointed to this position by Matthias himself, because he saw something."

"He saw a kind person."

"At least, that's what I have been told."

"Regardless, I understand something now from what little Matthias has taught Maz and I.

"I understand that we were wrong."

"About a lot of things, actually, but in particular, the treatment of women."

"Women may not equal men, but that doesn't mean we are lesser."

"We are every bit human as you are."

"Woman shouldn't be treated differently because they are a different gender."

"Do we all not have a part in this society?"

"I will let all of you think about that question."

She stepped back.

I sweat drop. 'Was… was that speech meant to encourage people to support the new government or not? I genuinely can't tell.'

"Now that these two have spoken, I intend to explain what I am trying to change. Please ask your questions now, and do not be afraid to speak."

Silence.

'Did they really have this much fear of the chiefs that they refuse to speak?'

"I promise on my eternal life as a god that you shall not be injured due to the questions you ask here." I try something bold.

It worked. It stunned the people. 'Does swearing on your life mean I will literally give up my life in this time period? Makes sense, considering the age of this world…'

"What do you actually plan on changing?" Someone who looked like they were in their thirties in the crowd asked,

"That will be told in due time." I respond. "However, right now I need questions that are a little less broad."

"How… exactly… do gods work?" Said a confused little girl in the audience, who's mother hushed them.

"I mean questions about the new government and your future, but if you must know, we are born with the world and live as long as the world exists." I make up on the spot.

Stars shone in the child's eyes, as if she just met god, which I guess she technically did.

"You keep saying that you are going to change a lot, and are telling us to ask questions, but how do you expect us to have questions when we ourselves don't know what questions to ask?" Shouts a guy from the back.

I laugh. "That's fair. Alright then, let me give you an overview. There will be a few new laws, regarding the peoples freedoms and privileges. There will be a written language that I will personally teach people, free of charge. Finally, I will start to personally oversee a few programs that will launch this village into the next steps of society."

It was quiet for a moment, until someone asked. "Why do we need a written language?"

"A lot of reasons, some of them not so simple. 1, it's an easy way of recording whatever you may need to record, such as history, calculations, or even your own thoughts! You can write letters to your neighbors, which means you communicate through written language, and then, you can just leave the letter in their house if they are not there so they can get the info you need them to have while not being there! At the end of the day, written language is extremely important and incredibly important for the future."

People looked satisfied with that answer. "What are calculations?" Asked a child Maz's age right in front of the stage.

"A form of something called mathematics. Mathematics is essentially a way to figure out how much of something you have or need. It's a good way to count. For example, if every tree had five apples and there was four trees, how many apples would you have?"

"20!"

"Yes, but why?"

"Because it's true!"

"But why is it true?" I continue.

"Uhh…"

"Because of Mathematics. 5+5+5+5. An additional 5 is added every time there is a new tree, making it 5x, X being represented by how many trees there are!"

I cough. "I apologize, I got off track a little. Any other questions?!"

"What are the projects you are planning on overseeing?"

"I have a project on agriculture and a project on housebuilding lined up."

"What's agriculture?"

That caught me off guard. "All of you… don't know what agriculture is?"

A resounding "No," was heard all over.

I sweat drop. 'I guess that explains why I didn't see any farms, huh? It IS the stone age, to be fair. It's already a miracle that they have logged houses.' "You know those berries you gather? Agriculture is abusing how the berries work to make them work for us. We plant them in ways that benefit us, essentially." I say, trying to keep it as simple as possible.

"How do you intend to do all if this as a strange symbol?"

"Firstly, I am a sundial. Have I not said this? I'm pretty sure I did… as for how I plan on doing this…"

I smile. "I plan on getting a little help from a certain person in a cell." 'Let's hope that I can get a human form before night falls.

"Any other questions?"

"No? Alright then, the three of us still have business to do, so all of you can go back to your homes and do whatever you need to do."

"Maz, ask the guard where the cage is, and please take me there."

My smile grows larger. "This experiment holds a lot of our future."
