People in this world/Multiverse of had something known as spiritual personifications, and universal characteristics.
Spiritual personifications were basically manifestations of their soul And by drawing energy out of the infinite energy source, from the neutral realm, which they would naturally gain upon birth, They would be able to manifest their personification and awaken their universal characteristic…
A person would normally be born with at least three universal characteristics in the most talented people would be born with five, universal characteristics could be seen as certain pathways created by a persons, spiritual personification. For example, if you're spiritual personification resemble flames, then your universal characteristics would be based around flames as well so one of them could've been flame manipulation. Another one would've been the ability to turn these flames into something else or something.
Then there are ….
nightmares. nightmares are basically personifications of certain spheres, and can be seen as spiritual personifications in their own right having insane, supernatural strength upon birth being able to topple entire towns. If they're near one, they also follow the same rules with characteristics with the fact that they're abilities tend to be more inverted and eldritch like….
Then there are pathways.
There are many pathways to power, and for every person a pathway is different as it's basically an description of your soul personification that's inscribed onto your soul and body. Basically you're very existence, With every pathway having a unique name, and also giving the user not only natural resistances, but certain talents, every character would have a unique and special soul to utilize…
After that, he skipped to 2098 Where nightmares were known to basically everyone and basically everyone had the ability to utilize their universal characteristics…
And after which he used his manipulation abilities to intertwine one singular nightmare, which would be the main character…
