A Happy Man

The sun rose just like every other day. Shining and bright, and rising from the east. Birds were chirping outside of Isaacs window, the beautiful sun silhouetting them as they flew away. Isaac narrowly opened his eyes, taking in the sunlight. Today was just like every other day, same as the sun. A new day meant new adventures and new journeys for people. No dark action story would contain such beauty would it? Isaac was a happy, happy man.

Every day there was the same old routine. Isaac knew it all too well. Isaac started to count down from 5 the second he opened his eyes. When he reached one, a sharp pain shot across his chest, making him release a small shriek. It was his mother, who had a belt in her hand.

Every day meant new adventures. This was a rule for every human on earth…except Isaac Holden.

"You're a disgrace to humanity!!! A disease!!! A demon!!! A plague!!!" The mother screamed as she released a fury of lashes from her belt.

Isaac was 16 at this time, and already had numerous scars across his body from the beatings he received from his father and mother. Both of the parents promised Isaac that these beatings were merely to purge a disease, and Isaac thought this to be a very well reason. He always thought the demon was something inside of him, and always anticipated the beatings, and yearning for them.

As bright as the sun's light, Isaac smiled with happiness as the mother started to rip open Isaacs chest with her beatings. While he was smiling, tears rolled down his cheeks from the pain until he began to laugh hysterically. Isaac Holden was a very, VERY happy man.

Present day…

"Hand me the scalpel quickly." Isaac ordered a nurse standing right next to him.

In front of Isaac was a bloodied body whose chest was opened up for surgery. Isaac held out a bloody hand, awaiting for the scalpel to be placed there. As the nurse started to reach for the scalpel, the lifeline began to beep faster than it did before. Isaac looked at it, concerned and then turned and grabbed the scalpel himself. The nurse raised her hands in defense as Isaac reached for it. He couldn't blame the nurse for being slow, not one bit. He knew that she was still a trainee and that this was her first ever professional surgery. And this kind of surgery was a very tricky one to deal with anyway.

"Dr. Isaac we have the incident report files in, when you're ready to look through them." A doctor said, holding up a vanilla folder.

Isaac nodded as he continued to look down. This was a fast paced emergency transplant, one that required a lot of attention and concentration to be done successfully. The minute the doctor walked in with the file, Isaac stopped dead in what he was doing, waiting for his concentration to regain to maximum efficiency before continuing to carefully cut away the meaty and fleshy bloody strings that held together the internal organs.

"Nurse." Isaac commanded suddenly.

The nurse instantly looked up and awaited for Isaacs next command.

"Yes Dr. Holden?"

Isaac reached and grabbed the folder on the table by the foot of the bed, handing it to her. The nurse took the folder from his hands and began to look for a place to set it down somewhere other than the foot of the bed.

"Read me the files of this case. I wanna know what I'm searching for in this heart exactly." Isaac commanded, continuing to lobotomize the inside of the person.

The nurse blinked once and opened the file, looking through it quickly to make sure she actually wanted to read all of it.

"Ok so, this man, who goes by the name Sehebath….strange name…" the nurse stopped to laugh at the name.

Isaac grumbled and stopped dead in his tracks again, waiting to regain concentration.

"Nurse. Please."

The nurse stopped laughing at the sound of Isaacs serious voice, and continued to read.

"Sehebath was caught in a lethal and violent fight over supporting an opposing political party to someone else. While fighting, both sides jabbed each other in the heart with a knife. The other fighter, whose identity is Jarrison Camry, broke a large shard of the knife in Sehebath's heart. Sehebath was found alive, but only barely." The nurse cringed as she read it.

The nurse placed the folder down and rubbed her arms, which were covered in goosebumps. Isaac sighed heavily. 'Typical of us humans to always resort to violence over the dumbest of arguments' Isaac thought angrily, cutting the last bloody string that held the heart.

"Ok, now, nurse…you said you've never seen what a heart looks like, correct?" Isaac asked, keeping his hands inside of the persons body.

The nurse nodded and let out an 'mhm' nervously, curious of Isaacs next act.

"Well today you finally get to see your first one…" Isaac enthusiastically said, beginning the hardest part of the operation.

Hours pass by and eventually, after a very careful operation, Isaac manages to remove the shard from the persons heart and transplant it with a new one. After the operation, Isaac and the nurse move to the changing and break room. Once inside, Isaac sits down heftily on one of the lounge chairs, releasing a very large and relieved sigh. The nurse crosses her arms as she sees him sit down.

"Do you need something Nurse Mindy?" Isaac asks, looking up at the nurse, or otherwise known as Mindy.

Mindy scoffs and grabs Isaacs arm, pulling him out of the chair with force.

"Don't you have any manners? You always let the woman take the seat, especially one that goes through something as hard as handing the doctor a scalpel." Mindy speaks calmly at first but angrily towards the end.

Isaac rolls his eyes. He knew that if he didn't use the scalpel quick enough, the patient would have been in danger. Again, Isaac could not blame Mindy for not getting it in time, since this was her first ever emergency surgery transplant, she didn't understand all of the full risks and dangers like Isaac did.

"The patient would have been in the red if I didn't close up the burst quick enough. You were moving a little too slow." Isaac moved towards the hard benches and sat down on them, sighing, relieved as he sat.

Mindy growled and crossed her arms, upset as she sat in the lounge seat.

"We've been working together for 5 years now. I know how to handle these kinds of operations." Mindy said offended.

"I never said you didn't know how to handle yourself-"

Mindy lunged forward, jabbing a finger at Isaac.

"You literally told me that this was going to mainly be solo because you said, and I quote 'Mindy, since you're inexperienced at this, I will be doing this mainly alone'. I mean what the hell Isaac!?"

Isaac opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. Knowing nothing came from his lips, he shut his mouth and tried to think of what to say. Mindy shook her head and leaned back. Isaac and Mindy. A pair that had been together for as long as they knew. Isaac smirked as he remembered the day he and Mindy met…..

It was on this day that Isaacs eyes had been opened to something so much larger.
