Waves

Mio walked down the stairs in a leisurely manner. Inside her heart was hammering inside her chest and she could not help but feel a little paranoid.

As she entered the dining room, she saw her favourite person, Jacob. He was talking to a very tall man, that immediately saw her when she walked in.

Jacob noticed the man glance behind him and turned around. Mio stood there in a light pink dress, that was quite short. She wore a pair of low pumps and had her hair tied back.

"My apologies if I'm interrupting," Mio said, she was about to leave when the Jacob said.

" No, it is okay. I am introducing you to the new housekeeper Miles."

Mio looked directly at the man and noticed that he had a pair of astute blue eyes and a mixed look. She guessed that one of his parents must have been a foreigner, much like Jacob's mother was.

" Afternoon Miss, I am Miles", the man bowed to her and Mio smiled politely.

" It's a pleasure to meet you".

Mio's manner and the way she conducted herself surprised Miles. He had expected her to be unruly and rude. As Jacob had previously expressed a look of displeasure when mentioning her.

" If I may ask what happened to the previous housekeeper?"

Mio had only interacted with the old housekeeper once or twice. Most of the time she was out of the house or in the kitchen.

" She needed to go," Jacob said and Mio left it at that.

Miles told Mio that he would be managing the house and also all of Jacob's affairs. His friendliness put her at ease and she found herself instantly liking him.

He directed the maids to serve lunch and Mio enjoyed the lunch as he attended to her. While this was going on Jacob watched from his seat narrowing his eyes. Miles and Mio seemed to hit it off and he suddenly saw her laugh.

Her lips curved up and her eyes shone. Her white teeth showed themselves and Jacob took a sip of his wine.

While Miles poured Mio some water.

When Miles left the dining room became quiet but Mio had a faint smile on her face.

" You like him?" Jacob asked and Mio looked at him.

He was actually talking to her first while they ate. It took a while for her to respond but her smile disappeared and a blank expression filled her face.

" Yes. Miles is very friendly and seems kind and funny too. He's a good choice".

" Oh is he?"

Jacob could tell that Mio was hinting at something by the way she described Miles.

" Is that the type you like?"

Mio nearly choked on her chicken. She questioned why Jacob was suddenly so interested in her, there was no way he was jealous. So she thought he must've hit his head when they were attacked yesterday.

" Why would my 'type' interest you?"

The usual friendly and soft tone Mio spoke with had become more direct and Jacob was intrigued by her change. Even her smiling and demureness seemed to have faded away.

Jacob drank more of his wine.

" Just asking. It seems you went out yesterday, did you encounter anything interesting?"

The fork and knife in Mio's hand were put down and she looked across the table at Jacob. He was fishing for information.

" No" she responded " Unless you would like to know about what girls talk about when we're alone. Then, by all means, it is certainly interesting"...

The light sarcasm in her voice made Jacob's mouth twitch. He pushed up his glasses and planted an amiable smile across his face, the smile that Mio despised.

" I would hope so".

Miles walked into the room and came directly to Jacob. He whispered something in Jacob's ear and Jacob's face froze.

" Okay, I'll handle it".

Jacob got up from his seat.

" Seems we'll have to continue our little chat later," he said.

Mio raised her brow " Seems so..."

Miles could feel a strange tension in the air. He looked between Jacob and Mio and then followed behind Jacob.

" Sir, are you sure you want to take care of this?"

Jacob who seemed very serious said " I think I need some fun. I'm feeling quite unhappy today".

From Jacob's expression Miles shivered. He felt that the man they had captured from the warehouse yesterday, was probably going to lose his mind.
