5 First steps(4)

I woke up early the next morning and went down for breakfast. Naomi had quite a big house for a vendor, the house has two stories, the ground floor, where the store and the kitchen were, the store taking most of the space and the kitchen being a small but well-ventilated room with appliances and a small table where we ate, the first floor was where we lived. It had two bedrooms, a small living room, and a tiny bathroom. It wasn't a big house but it was enough for the two of us.

While I make my way to the kitchen I can smell the fried eggs being, my stomach grumbles, Naomi hears it.

"You're up early!" she says coming to hug me.

"Good morning!" I say, still half asleep.

I take a seat at the table and ask granny "Granny the woman yesterday, who was she?"

"She is an air acolyte, a person that works at the air temple and upholds the air bender values"

"So she's an air bender?"

"No, she is a normal person just like you and me but lives like an air bender"

"That's weird, why would anyone want to live like something they are not, anyway how do you know her?"

"Sweetheart that's not it, there's more to it, they don't learn bending moves or things like that, they learn to spread compassion and love, being an air acolyte is about being a good person to yourself and others and about how I know her well, she used to live across the street and I was good friends with her parents so she would often come and play with Yun." A sad look fell on her face. This often happened when she was thinking about her dead son.

"So if being an air acolyte is about being a nice person then why isn't granny, who's the nicest person, an air acolyte?" I say, trying to change the subject.

"I'm too old to travel the world so I can't become one, but if I could I think I would be the best air acolyte." She laughs and winks at me.

"Then granny do you think one day I might become an air acolyte?"

"Sure if that's what you want."

'Well, that's reassuring, at least when the time comes to leave she won't object too much.'

Although it might seem cold of me to think about this I have a reason for wanting to leave. My last life was boring, I spent most of my time in one place, I didn't travel so much and my only passions were reading, drawing, and playing games, my favorite genre was fantasy so you can understand why I'm excited about this new life. I don't want to spend this life as an ordinary worker, I want adventure so become one of the avatar companions would be ideal, and to do that the easiest and safest path is to become an air acolyte on Air Temple Island.

I'm not stupid to think this is going to be easy, with adventure comes danger, and so I need to be prepared. If I'm to join the avatar on her adventures, I need to become powerful. I don't know if I can bend or not, but I'm probably not a bender, I tried to bend every element and nothing so the only option I have left is to make myself some gear to counteract benders and learn some martial arts that help me to incapacitate them. For both those problems, I have the answer and it's simpler than you imagine... I just need to wait a while.

It might sound questionable at first but if you really start to think about it makes sense. In a few years, the equalist movement will start to grow and dojos where people learn chi blocking will appear like mushrooms and about the equipment I need, well that's easy I just need for the Equalists to provide it to me. Although the equipment is not to my taste, I can tinker with it once I get it.

There is only problem with that. For me to tinker with it I need to know the science behind it, for me to learn the science behind it I need the books about this world's science but the books are useless if I don't know how to read and another important fact is that I need to learn as quick as possible because the earlier I start to read the easier it will be for me. Here I am again blocked by the fact that I don't know how to read.
