Preface

This is a true story based on how my grandparents met and fell in love back in the 1950's in a small town in North Carolina. He was a handsome Yankee from Brooklyn, left alone in the world after leaving the military to bury his father. He needed a fresh start. She was the eldest of 8 children born to a poor farming family that grew up to be Miss Ahoskie—the woman every man wanted to take out and every woman wanted to be.

They didn't expect to find each other in such a small corner of the world.

I'm beginning to write their story because that wonderful man passed away in September and it broke all of our hearts. I grew up hearing my grandmother tell me about how she met my grandfather. Every anniversary, she recited what she did on her wedding day as if it were her first time telling us. My grandfather just smiled and let her prattle on. He wasn't as forthcoming with details and I wish I had asked him for more. He was content to let her shine. They were the perfect match for each other.
