202 Preparing for the Worst

__________ POV Kurapika__________

"We can't go slacking now that Ashton is temporarily out of the picture. We need to make sure that humanity is prepared for the mass migration of the beasts in the Dark Continent."

Cheadle has called this meeting to inform the newer arrivals. But the rest of us are also in need of some motivation.

Losing Ashton at such a crucial time is likely going to cause us a lot of trouble. But it could've been worse. From what he said, the barrier is only weakened at this point, it probably hasn't fallen completely as of now.

At least we can assume so.

"So all of us will be deported to the newest built city?" Maha asked while looking around the table.

"Yes, the city is already prepared and livable. There are only a few more houses to work on. But that can be done with time. For now, we can also use tents." Cheadle is still the leader of the expedition. Even after the arrival of the others.

The employees of the hunter association were to be spread out throughout all of the cities to keep a close eye on all of them.

The arrival of all of these new Nen Users will make our lives much easier. But new threats will also start appearing from now on. If beasts powerful enough to push Ashton to that extent are actually in Lake Mobius, then more are bound to come.

Thankfully, Ashton did confirm to the Zoldycks that such powerful monsters are few and far between. But, to us, even the weaker monster in the Dark Continent might become an issue.

"... We're sitting ducks. The only thing we have going for us is that we have some understanding of the monsters we will end up facing eventually," Botobai spoke with irritation.

He's one of the oldest members of the Zodiacs. He doesn't seem quite pleased with the situation.

Even now, the only reason we have some knowledge of the beasts in the Dark Continent is due to Ashton's interference.

He gave a special type of 'relic' as he calls them, to one of the Zoldyck elders. It's a strange book that lists all of the species alive.

It's a bit strange. Ashton said that it's only listing the ones that other humans have observed before. But I don't remember all of the discussions we've had on his powers and abilities.

He loved speaking of technicalities and the way his powers worked alongside these relics.

"As we are now, we can barely fight off the beasts found in this land. We need to make sure that we are prepared for the ones that might come." Mizastom spoke out soon after Botobai. He perfectly summarised the entirety of our meeting.

"As we are now, the price for preparation is paid for in resources and delegates manpower, but we can't afford to be stingy. All of our lives depend on this." Cheadle spoke with a frustrated sigh.

"We better get to work. I'm sure we each can find something to do in these busy times. But we also need a clear goal." Maha said while looking around the table.

This old man is odd. He's apparently Killua's ancestor. How he's alive is beyond me. But I guess Ashton is also still alive, so that point's dead.

Well... There's that small thought at the back of my head. What if Ashton isn't alive? What if he doesn't survive his ordeal?

... What will happen to humanity then?

We are all wholly unprepared to deal with the upcoming crisis. I'm also afraid that no amount of preparation will be enough.

Even worse. I never got to say to him, that I forgive him. After all, dying with regrets is worse than just dying in general.

At first, I didn't know if I could bring myself to forgive him. But then I looked at things more and more. I ended up realising that a lot of the stuff he did after meeting me has been only to help me.

He decided on killing his disciple, Chrollo, for me. He even made me a Nen Beast. One that has gotten stronger for some reason...

I can think of a few reasons as to why this happened. But the most apparent one... Post-Mortem Nen.

I haven't told anyone of this. And I certainly won't anytime soon. I just hope Ashton has a way to come back to us...

Thankfully, the others aren't aware of how strong the Nen Beasts he made were. Momoze is also new to Nen, so it's unlikely for her to notice the difference.

"Kurapika! What's wrong? You've been spacing out for a while now." Leorio is the one that got me out of my trance.

"Just thinking of a few things. I guess the next few weeks will be even busier than the ones before." I need to get my mind out of the gutter.

We don't have time to stand around and contemplate our futures. We're too busy trying to save them.

__________ POV Camilla __________

Oh, Ashton... For all of your intelligence and experience, you were never truly knew about a woman's heart, did you?

So many things you could've done better to lighten the load on poor Momoze's heart. Yet, I guess you didn't have much time left.

I'm not hopeful about that old hunter's fate. Why? Well, I like to be realistic. I heard what they told Momoze about his condition.

That his body was decomposing already. They didn't speak much of the severity of it.

But, I am well aware that they won't tell her the full details of his condition. His chances of survival must be slim enough to make one feel hopeless.

I think our time without Ashton's help will be interesting to see. How long will we last? Will we thrive?

Regardless, I've been noticing quite an interesting phenomenon. My Nen seems to be slowly getting stronger. I don't know why, but I guess it has to do with my heightened senses.

I'm sure other Nen users noticed this too.

Even regular people seem to be growing in terms of Aura. Without any prior training.

I can't wait to see what the future has in store for us...
