196 Nuclear Pursuit

__________ POV Ashton__________

How exactly do you deal with a giant whale pursuing you and trying to swallow your ship?

Well, that's pretty simple, you give it something else to swallow. Usually, I'd suggest high power nuclear weapons and the like, but I don't carry any of those with me.

So I guess I'll have to settle for cheaper shittier nuclear weapons and biochemical weapons. Why do I carry those with me? Well, having something like that can bring some peace of mind.

Although I don't use them for 'peace of mind' I use them to nuke things I don't like. And honestly, I don't really like this whale all that much.

I mean, It's a fascinating specimen and I am quite excited to have met one, but I'm not exactly happy to have it pursue me and the other human survivors back to the new human continent.

I do kind of need them all alive, at least most of them. The colony is in dire need of more hands and I'd hate to lose this many at once.

I also don't have much energy left to place them all in my void space as I did with the others. To be fair, I was already a bit drained when I arrived here, I did fly at full speed for a few hours.

Also, opening up that large a void space is exhausting, I wouldn't even have been able to do it in the past. I usually stick to opening small rifts, but this does count as a special situation.

I looked back at the way the large beast swam through the waves trying to reach the ship. At this stage, it's only a matter of minutes before it catches up to the ark.

This boat is no doubt one of my stronger relics, but this beast doesn't even seem to be breaking a sweat to catch up to it.

This is a bit disappointing to see. But I guess that there aren't many things besides this that can outswim the ark.

But I guess I shouldn't get too complacent now, if there's one there can be more. It would be nice if the compendium of the wild hunt was a bit more descriptive of species that I've never observed, but you can't have them all.

Currently, there are still two minutes left before it catches up to us, but I should start preparing to welcome it.

First off, I ran towards the back of the ship, the Zoldycks looked confused for a second before they decided to follow me.

Then, after slowing down the ark and urging Zeno to fly me above the seas, I opened up another rift in space, using half of my remaining energy in the process to expand it to around 5 meters.

After which, I started pulling out large cylindrical objects, these aren't exactly finished products, but they should explode nonetheless.

I dropped at least ten of them in the water, after which Zeno flew me back on the ark and I quickly sped up to get away from the site.

Worst case scenario, this only angers the beast, not even scratching it properly, but that's unlikely, it should at least injure it a bit.

This thing still has no shot of being stronger than my teacher, but the problem here is that we are technically in its territory. Here, this thing is at its strongest.

"Everyone! Cover your ears and don't stand on the deck!" I issued that command loud enough for everyone to hear. Thankfully, they listened to me.

The civilians all ran inside the ark and

After less than a minute of steering the ark away from the 'minefield', everyone could hear a powerful explosion.

Even when they were muffled by water, the sound of ten consecutive nuclear explosions is still deafening.

And the sea reacted accordingly, the blast and power of the explosions rose a tsunami towards the ark, it was blocked by the barrier, but I reckon that it wasn't pleasant turbulence for our passengers.

I could see it clearly, in the middle of all of the fire, waves and radiation... But I didn't need to see it, I heard the enraged roar of that beast crystal clear. And so did everyone else, it was hard to ignore, an eardrum breaking sound that I can only describe as irritating.

This whale is certainly mad, but it also definitely got injured, I could see a hue of red in the gigantic waves, a sign that the large beast couldn't shrug off such powerful weapons with ease.

Even if they are the weakest nuclear weapons that I made, they are still strong enough to level a mountain range when chained together like they were now.

"Are you insane?!!" Maha, who is one of the people that didn't go inside the ark, was quick to question my sanity.

But I guess he just feels the need to shout at something since he couldn't even cover both of his ears when the explosion happened.

"Totally!!" I shouted right back at him as I navigated the ark to use the force of the waves to accelerate our retreat.

It's been a while since I've been this thrilled. I guess it's also been a while since I've been in danger.

In truth, I can only run away in this situation, I am already exhausted and I don't see myself surviving against that thing.

If you think about it, this scenario has become even more dangerous than the fight with Brion, and that does say quite a lot about the strength of this large whale. It does stand at the top of the food chain when it comes to sea life and all of that.

Not only that, it's by no means mindless, unlike the other troglodytes that infest these waters, this whale is highly intelligent and devious, it wasn't affected by the same 'plague' as the residents of the Dark Continent.

Thankfully, this thing is also a curious sort, it had no actual reason to pursue us besides its curiosity. This isn't an extremely violent species, the compendium called them 'the explorers of the sea'.

I'd love to get to study a member of this species. But I am really in no shape to take that thing on.

__________ POV Narration__________

As Ashton manoeuvred the Ark onto the waves something else happened. The water at the origin of those waves seemed to stir.

A large body started squirming in the middle of that unnaturally formed whirlpool, those movements spoke of pain, its mannerisms gave away its anguish.

Half of its huh head had been razed off, its skull was fully visible, it had tanked the brunt of those explosions with its head.

And it showed, Ashton could clearly see the damage it had dealt to the creature. And it was most certainly unpleasant.

'...I guess that was just a cub? No way an adult ancestral whale would've been this injured from a few shitty nukes.' And he was right... Unfortunately.

After all... Ancestral Whales hunt as families...

Too bad the compendium didn't quite mention that part.
