6 The safe house

"Good. Now, Sebastian please sit down at a table and ask the others how everything works. I will be off in the kitchen.", healer Regina said to Sebastian who just nodded.

After she was out of the room he turned to the others and just smiled awkwardly, "Hello?"

"You can come here and sit with us.", a boy at a table in the corner of the room said.

Sebastian nodded and walked over to the four boys sitting at the table. One of them stood up and took an empty chair from another table and placed it in front of Sebastian who said thanks and sat down.

"Welcome. I am Alexander Aarens from the Ancient House of Aarens. Would you like to introduce yourself?", the boy who had called Sebastian to their table introduced himself.

"Nice to meet you. I am Sebastian Roth. My parents are both squibs, so I don't know about the rest of my family or their status.", Sebastian replied to which the Alexander, a handsome boy with blond hair bound behind his neck and blue eyes raised his left eyebrow and smiled.

"Roth. Well, I know this family. They are in the hunting business.", Alexander said and cleared his throat. "Human hunting for our government, if you understand what I mean. They are a very old but modern family. A good family but a bit rough at least from what I experienced. I think there is another child from the Roth family in our year. She is called Nadine Roth, I think and is the daughter of the family head's younger brother."

"Wow, I didn't know. You've mentioned our year, what can you tell me about school?", Sebastian asked.

"I think I can tell you something about it. I am Andreas Kuhn, my father is the transfiguration teacher at Blackwald Institute.", another boy with blond hair but with green eyes said. Somehow this hair colour seemed very common around here.

"Sure, please do.", Sebastian said.

"Well, there isn't a lot I am allowed to say, but the school is in the Black Forest. It's a mix of medieval and modern architecture with several ponds and a few clearings surrounding it. But it is very deep inside of the forest."

"The school itself is very competitive and there is more about it than you would think. We also have many electives, but the standard courses are charms, defence against the dark arts, transfiguration, potions, herbology and astronomy. The standard."

"Each year, there are around one hundred and sixty new students. That's something that is confusing me. By now, there are more than 250 students gathered here and I don't understand why. It can't be that our year is so much different.", Andreas finished.

"Oh, I didn't know there were so many students, and thanks for the information.", Sebastian said.

"Well, no problem. And you see, the wizarding population is around 1.3 million with many more squibs and many other intelligent creatures. There are currently around thirty thousand wizards living in Germany and Austria. And there are many ghosts, around sixty thousand in Germany and Austria. They have some unknown place where they gather and mix their energy, because the soul slowly dissipates if they aren't bound to a place with a high magical density, or at least that's what my mother said when I asked her. By the way, many ghosts in Germany and neighbouring countries were eradicated by the former German muggle regime. I don't know why, but it seems they had something against them.", Andreas added while Sebastian began to stare at him with a blank look.

"ok…", was all he was able to say.

Afterwards the others explained Sebastian what the were doing here and why they had to come to the safe house.

Turns out, it was because of precaution and to help them develop connections without any pressure because of school. They had spent most of their days playing wizarding chess, cards or gobstone, playing outside, talking, reading some of the books, which were all storybooks or reading the book they had gotten for school.

Sebastian learned that they, too, didn't have any education in any magical arts. No spells or techniques. Nothing.

Sebastian had decided to stick with them and together they discussed chapter two and three of the book: 'How to 'camp'' and 'Food', which went into detail on how to set up a safe camp, start a fire for cooking or grilling, how to find water and how to know where the territory of dangerous creatures begins or how to differentiate parts of the forest.

Unluckily their stay at the safe house wasn't optimal to practice chapter 5: 'A guide to hiding', so all they could do was prank or scare each other.

Two weeks went by and now there were 273 newcomers, which was way over the average 160 students per year. With this many students, the house became very full and very loud, so the five boys began locking themselves inside of a chamber to talk, play and discuss.

Fortunately, it was mentioned that in four days, school were to start so they finally went to read the last chapter they had left out so far: 'Nifty spells for survival'.

'There are a large variety of way you can ensure your survival, but there are a few main ones:

Hide from it. If you can be sure you are hidden in a way, no one can find you and every resource you need is available, you are safe. Outsmart it. Invent spell or techniques to stop or kill, or to take a completely different approach so you can be seen but not reached and still have every resource you need, you are safe. Run away from it. Be on the run and collect everything you need in any situation by knowing a lot and knowing where to find something and still run. Then you are safe. Kill and destroy it. Become the hunter and dispose of any threat or obstacle. Afterwards you have everything available at your fingertips. Then you are safe.

It was a lot for Sebastian. Not because there were a lot of spells, but rather because he didn't understand shit and couldn't even practice courtesy to him and nobody else having wand.

At least he was able to understand the advantages and disadvantages for a lot of situations thanks to having read all the other chapter. Though, why did he have to read about finding water when there was a water creation spell. Why? He didn't know.

In the end, he read every spell and tried to memorize its incantation, effect, and wand movement, which he practiced with the other boys with knives they had stolen from the kitchen. They looked absolutely silly and instead of learning, they spent most of the time laughing after someone mentioned they were five give in a closet practicing so swing their wands.

Two days before the start of school, everyone got their wands, or in Sebastians case, their staff. Seriously? (Yes)

He got a long black and brown wooden staff with a snake head and two small and sharp teeth barely showing. It was around 1,4 meters long, but a note delivered with it stated, that it would be growing with him in the future.

After Sebatian first picked up his staff there was a bright flash, small, black birds were dancing above his head and his body felt like there was a warm and healing fire burning inside of every part of his body. He felt great.

Now, he was finally ready to do magic.

There was nothing that could stop Sebastion now!

Except a little detail he didn't see on the staff; in red coloured letters was written:

'LOCKED'

"Fuck me!", Sebastian cursed.

"Dear Sebastian, I am sure you will excuse me if I decline, and it has always been like this. Your wands or staffs will unlock when you are transported to school. I am sure you will realise that there is a valid reason for it.", Regina said from the side.

"Sorry, I was just too excited have looked forward to receiving my own staff for a long time.", Sebastian replied, his ears turning red from shame.

"It is alright. At least you can practice the movements for the next few days. Have fun.", Regina said and smiled.

Two days later, at 12 o'clock, the portkeys activated, just that they didn't bring the students to school as expected…
