53 Chapter 53 - burning violets

Faun woke up reluctantly; he remembered all that had happened as soon as he was conscious so he very much didn't want to wake up.

He didn't need to open his eyes, Declan's scent was all over him, he knew that the werewolf was close by.

Werewolf.

He should have known, he just turned a blind eye to the signs.

No human could be as lax and accepting as Declan had been which was true, Declan wasn't human.

"Hey." Declan's raspy voice close to his ear made him flinch, a faint touch on his cheek causing him to cringe away.

Declan's expression remained empty, devoid of emotion even when Faun opened his eyes in horror and scrambled away from him.

"Are you hungry? I'll get something for you." He quietly said, making no move to go after Faun.

Faun stayed as far away as he could from Declan without leaving the bed. He wanted to say that he wasn't hungry but he couldn't get a word past his tight throat.

"Don't leave this room." Declan added gently when Faun gave no response, heading for the door that led out of the room.

It wasn't like Faun could leave because he had his personal bodyguards situated in front of the room, watching over him.

It still didn't ease his worries because he knew very well how much of a danger Faun was in.

Faun quietly watched as Declan left the room, a sad pain in his eyes.

He should have known that Declan was too good to be true.

He curled up at the edge of the bed where he had retreated fearfully to, his tail wrapped protectively around his body.

What was going to happen to him now? He wasn't a dunce, he knew very well that Declan hadn't mated him properly.

At first he had taken it in stride because it wasn't possible for a human's teeth to break through skin that easily but now… now…

Why was Declan keeping him around anyway? Out of pity?

That was the last thing he wanted, he wished that Declan would have just let him go.

He didn't even mind getting killed by werewolves or humans later on if he somehow managed to escape. What he did mind was being some pet to the prince of werewolves.

He would rather be dead.

Being around werewolves triggered all of his flight responses, the werewolf being Declan in particular tripled that reaction.

He just wanted to be left alone at this point. He would prefer going back to his solitary life deep in the woods.

At least the most the wild would give him was a physical hurt, not this painful gash deep in his heart that couldn't be healed.

Did that mean that Declan knew exactly what he was when he saved him back in the woods? Why? Why would he do that?

They were natural enemies!

It all made Faun's head ache, tears building up behind his eyelids. Crying wasn't going to save him this time, there was no one to save him from Declan.

He flinched violently when the door opened again, pressing himself against the headboard at the sight of Declan.

Declan tongued his cheek, breaking his perfect mask. His eyes got darker the longer Faun was awake, it made him want to put him to sleep again, at least then he could hold him.

"Here." He said simply, placing the food gently on a side table like Faun was a jittery wild animal that he didn't want to scare.

A vein ticked in his jaw as he watched Faun cringe away from him with terror in his eyes, his ears pressed tightly against the sides of his face. He wasn't a monster.

He thought they had something together but just because he turned out to be a werewolf, it was all gone, down the drain.

Faun took his first proper breath after Declan left the room, fine trembles shaking his entire body.

He didn't even spare the food that Declan had brought a glance, curling up on the bed again.

He craved sleep, if only he could just fall asleep, because the waking world was a nightmare.

Cade watched Declan storm out of the room for the second time. "He doesn't look very happy." He commented thoughtfully.

"No shit." Ash scoffed.

The putrid scent of terror was glaring; he had no idea what kind of relationship the prince had with the hybrid that they were charged to look over but right now, it wasn't looking very good.

"Do you think we should check on him?" Ash muttered, referring to the hybrid.

Cade could see the lines of guilt on Ash's face, he no doubt wanted to apologise.

"I wouldn't advise it." He muttered darkly.

Declan hadn't hesitated to sprain Ash's hand when he caught him touching the hybrid, hell! He doubted that Declan even recognised them until after he was sure that the hybrid was safe.

The air between them remained tense, the scent of burnt flowers mixing in with it. It made for a very uncomfortable lookout.

Inside the room, Faun was still wide awake. He hadn't been granted the luxury of sleeping any longer, there was too much adrenaline running through his system for him to relax.

For the first time, he looked around him, it looked like he was in a fancy bedroom but where was he exactly?

There was a window so he gingerly got off the bed and made his way over to the window to get a look.

His heart nearly leapt out of his throat when he did, they were in the air! In a private plane no doubt.

When he had ascertained where he was, he returned back to the bed, curling around himself once more.

Where were they going? How much time had passed since they were in the cottage?

So many questions and yet no one to give him any answers.

With a forlorn sigh, he let his eyes slip shut; his existence was at the whims of werewolves now.

He knew he always had terrible luck, but this time, it was exceptionally bad.
