Host, Please Be Honest! What Exactly Are You? is a story about a reincarnated exorcist-cum-cultivator who has been tasked with defending a world with no exorcists. He is also given a system to help accomplish this task. A very interesting premise. It's a cultivation story with a focus on exorcism and fighting various underworld monsters. However, the execution left much to be desired. Writing quality is very poor. There are countless amounts of mistakes, and this is borderline MTL quality. This novel desperately needs an editor. However, I'll give it two stars since it's somewhat readable. (2/5 stars) Story development. The issue with this novel is closely tied into the character design as well. While I said this story focuses on exorcism, the execution may lead you to believe otherwise. This novel actually focuses on face slapping as many people as possible. None of these important people talk to each other, apparently, so the main character can go around and face slap each one of them individually. Usually this stops at some point, but it's chapter 248 and the novel still hasn't stopped with its face slapping plot. At first it was bearable, but it got so repetitive I had to drop the novel. (2/5 stars) The character design is very poor as well. Everything wrong with your typical Xianxia novel is amplified in this novel. There are strictly two types of characters in this novel. Those who hate the main character, and those who treat him as God himself. Usually, those who hate the main character will end up revering him after a few slaps to the face. The characters overall have zero personality, and the main character is emotionless. The only character with a actual personality is the system, and it's rather annoying at times. (2/5 stars) The world background is actually pretty good compared to the rest. The way they describe the world(s) in a timely manner as well as various monsters and their habits makes me wish they worked on the plot and character design a bit more. (4/5 stars) Overall, a novel with a great premise, but horrible execution. The characters as well as the plot are very bad, and not much effort was put into either. The only redeeming factor is the world background, which is actually pretty good. I give this novel 2.8 stars out of 5.
Im caught up with the current release, just as a preface. This story is amazing, it has some of the stupid cliches that always happen wIth a transmigration noveL, but its extremely easy to ignore amd doesnt take away from the story at all. Its a unique idea and so far has been executed extremely well. I have very high hopes for the future of this novel if the author can keep with this quality work.
The premise was pretty interesting. The story was definitely enough to get me hooked and wanting more. However, the writing was simply atrocious. I have no idea if it's a translation issue or the author is ESL and is still learning English. Having an editor would help this novel a lot. Or perhaps even some kind of writing assistant to check for grammar and spelling.
the lack of editing in this novel is disappointing. was such a niche genre. had all the potentials to be a gem but been riddled with the mass of people who likes to give opinions about mc all around him. a mashup of, young master cliches Mommy lying trough (whatever it means) the monsters are actually the most interesting part of this novel and make it unique among others. if it just cuts up the excess waste of fillers of every non-named NPC talks, it would have been a much better novel. I'll skim around for a few more to find that interesting part alone.
The novel is very interesting and very different, a great read to get out of the same cliché (despite having its clichés... cough young master cough). The criticism is that the author gets a lot lost talking about things out of the context of the moment, character and scene, things like people working and the place where she is working (which adds nothing and consumes 1 chapter, if not many).
Surprisingly a hidden gem , this novel has a different out look on cultivation where it's a modern society however there exists demons and stuff *small spoilers* a sole exorcist is sent to this world to cleans it of demons and monsters while spreading the art of exorcists / cultivation . He has a system but rarely uses it and he himself is kind of shrouded in mystery as its often hinted that he's not human but something else . This novel is kind of like the series of Supernatural , it's overall an amazing read
While it can feel repetitive in the sense of their reactions after he beats the ghosrt, seems like a copy paste of "So he was that powerful, i must not offend this man" and "Too bad blah blah, then what he said next surprised them". However everything else is amazing and this is just short of a masterpiece because of that one problem. Looking forward to see mcs background, is he the creator? I guess i need to finish the novel to tell.
