Chapter 20

“He didn’t tell me crap.”

David wanted to ask Kaden what the gift was but then thought that would be opening the door to talking about their past more.

“He must’ve have been proud that you made it to the MLB.”

David relaxed, happy that the tension had eased between them. “Yes, he said playing summer ball, college ball, and doing minor league for a year or so, was the right thing. It got me noticed and I got a three-year MLB contract.”

Kaden avoided David’s gaze. He opened his mouth, but then closed it again as if he had something pithy to say but didn’t want to say if for fear of maybe upsetting David.

David continued. “Dad didn’t even get upset after I had right shoulder surgery that took me out from pitching and having my knee surgery. He told me, ‘that’s baseball, son,’ proud of you that you made it this far.”

“Yeah. I saw the big scars on your shoulder when I came in.”
