“I can’t afford one. They’re expensive, and you have to pay for airtime. And texts. I have to save money for school and all.”

“Well, if I make any money in the future, and you don’t have a cell phone, I’m getting you one.”

“That’s so sweet,” Sarah said. She started to cry, and David hugged her again. “You can always turn down that scholarship to UCLA and stay here. We can go to Valencia together, and then transfer to UCF after two years.”

“You know I can’t. It’s a full-ride scholarship to play baseball. My father will kill me. This is more his dream for me to play baseball than mine, you know.”

“I know,” Sarah said, hugging him again and crushing him at the same time. “But you’re so good at baseball.”

“Have you seen Kaden?”

“Yes, but I don’t know if you should look for him.”

“Why?” A Linkin Park song came on while David waited for Sarah’s answer.

“He’s been drinking.”

David scanned the pool. “How’s that possible? It’s a school sponsored event.”
