Chapter 9

He got out of the car after he finished parking then walked toward the house with Saya following closely behind him. Every step she took behind him, made his heart pound nervously.

'Did I go too far?' Trevor frowned to himself as he unlocked the front door and held it open for her to walk in. She avoided his eyes and looked past him.

"Ah, I guess I did go too far." He answered his own question.

"Mr. Burton, you don't live at the mansion anymore?"

"I moved out here when you left."

"It would have been wonderful if it had happened when we had our fake marriage. Maybe then your family would not have treated me terribly." She said, her tone laced with sadness and disappointment.

"It was agreed on by my family to bring my first wife home and we would live when she gave me a baby. I'm sorry for the hurt you had to bear Saya. Though our marriage was not real, I have not forgiven myself for the poor choices I made." Trevor walked to her and stood before her.

He gently pinched her chin and tilted her head so her eyes were looking up at him.

"I went too far with what I said in the car. I just don't understand your thoughts at times."

Saya pulled away from his warm fingers and gave him her back trying to hide her flushed face.

"You're right. I have no right to ask those questions. I will be mindful of my behavior."

"Saya, is there something you want to say to me? Is everything okay? Do you need money? You have never interacted with me this much since you left. You did not have to thank me for the gift. You always avoid me but today you came to me and even invited me to dinner." Trevor cut to the chase.

"Nothing is wrong." She turned to Trevor and flashed him a warm smile, but he did not believe her.

Trevor knew her best and he knew she was up to something.

"Then what is it? Did you fall in love with me because of the fruits and candy basket and come to confess?" He grinned.

"I-I don't know…" She murmured but he did not hear.

"Hm?"

"Ah, Mr. Burton. It's getting late, so you should cook. Do you need my help?" She tried to end the conversation.

"About that… I lied."

"You what?"

"I lied. My friend and his wife are not coming to dinner. They canceled just before we left my company."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you never come looking for me. I thought something was wrong and wanted to find out. If we went out, you would avoid telling me what's wrong like you just did, so I decided to keep the original plan. In my defense, I invited you before they canceled. So truthfully, I did not really lie. I just did not inform you they texted to say they wouldn't be coming anymore."

"But we could have gone out as I had planned." She replied calmly.

"Are you upset?"

"No, I am not. But I did make reservations. I have to pay for the late cancellation."

"Oh, I had no idea. How about this, I am going to cook you dinner and I will drive you home. I'll pay for the cancellation."

"But we still have time if we leave now…"

"Do you not want to have dinner here with me?" Trevor asked bluntly.

"T-That's not it. I just thought that having to cook may be troublesome for you."

"Stay, let me cook you dinner Saya."

"Okay." Her reply warmed his heart and the room.

"Make yourself comfortable. I'm going for a quick shower." Trevor said then disappeared down the hallway.

When he got to his room he shut the door behind him so that Saya would not hear him. He looked through his phone and found Marcus' number and hurriedly dialed.

"Yo, dude why did you cancel? You know we're leaving tomorrow right?" Marcus' voice could be heard over the phone.

"Something came up. Don't even know why I canceled but it's like this... I'll make it up to you and your wife. I promise to pay for your next trip."

"Haha, no complaints here. So, Trev what's going on? Don't tell me you ditched us for this girl your mom wants you to get married to. Thought you disliked her…"

"No, saw an old friend and I wanted to catch up with her."

"Oh, it's a girl. Hope she's single. Am I meeting her soon?" Marcus' voice filled with excitement.

"It's not like that, so don't get any weird ideas. Just called to say, don't even think of showing up unannounced. Take your wife to a luxurious restaurant."

"Trev, wait is it the girl…" Marcus began speaking but Trevor ended the call before he could continue.
