Secret Deal

"It looks like it's my win, and by a clear score difference of 10," Shroud mused quietly, a sense of triumph filling his thoughts. While the outcome was predictable from his perspective, he couldn't ignore the alternative factors that could have influenced the final result—the possibility of Herald tampering with the exam scores.

Shroud found himself torn between certainty and uncertainty regarding Herald's potential interference. He wondered if Herald would attempt to manipulate the scores, particularly in subjects like Social Studies. The idea crossed his mind that Herald might play it safe, awarding Shroud just enough marks to allow Aden to secure the victory without arousing suspicion.

"In the grand scheme of things, people often claim that a mere piece of paper cannot determine one's future. However, that's far from the truth. The real essence of that saying lies in the fact that a single mistake in your life shouldn't define you for all eternity," Shroud contemplated inwardly, his mind seeking deeper meaning in the outcome.

Nevertheless, Shroud was confident that he could expose Herald's dishonest actions if he ever dared to manipulate the exam scores. But he had no reason to believe such measures would be necessary; there was simply no chance of Herald resorting to such tactics.

A few weeks prior, when Shroud had paid a visit to Orpheus's office one evening...

"If I manage to secure a spot in the top three of this examination, could I be granted some time off from school?" Shroud inquired, hoping to obtain a brief respite from his academic obligations.

Orpheus raised an eyebrow in response to Shroud's request. He had already witnessed the numerous setbacks Shroud had endured due to his prolonged hospitalization. In truth, Orpheus was concerned about Shroud missing out on further educational opportunities and falling behind.

However, the bullying Shroud had experienced in the past had already impeded his progress. Orpheus was unable to take action at the time due to a lack of evidence to support Shroud's claims against Raphael, the culprit.

While it wasn't outright bullying within the school premises, Shroud had endured persistent harassment. Unfortunately, the extent of the mistreatment did not warrant Raphael's expulsion, leaving Orpheus with limited power to address the situation.

Outside of school, it was the responsibility of the authorities to protect Shroud from harm. However, a problematic circumstance arose when Raphael threatened Shroud, warning him of dire consequences if he were to report the incidents.

Unlike Autumn, who possessed the courage to confront such issues head-on, Shroud was more timid and afraid to take action. Even when Orpheus questioned him about the bruises on his face, Shroud remained silent.

This particular incident nearly caused Orpheus to lose hope in Shroud. Yet, being his only nephew and the son of his late brother, Orpheus was unwilling to give up on him. He desired to see Shroud grow, but without any signs of improvement, Orpheus knew not to expect too much.

Nevertheless, Orpheus was prepared to offer his assistance to Shroud, regardless of his growth. However, he also knew that he couldn't shelter Shroud indefinitely; there were limits to what he, as an uncle, should do.

Deep in thought, Orpheus delivered a stern "No" as his initial response. However, he could sense that Shroud wasn't ready to give up just yet. A faint smile graced Orpheus's face. "Seems like that crybaby has matured a bit," he mused before continuing.

"I won't grant you a complete pardon from attendance, as that would be unfair to other students. But how about we establish some rules and conditions?" Orpheus proposed, offering an alternative solution.

"I'm all ears," Shroud replied, showing his willingness to listen.

"Firstly, you must place in the top three, as you suggested earlier. Secondly, even if you achieve that, I can only grant you a maximum of five days' leave from school," Orpheus stated firmly.

Though Shroud frowned slightly, he refrained from complaining. Five days was neither too long nor too short. Then came the final condition, which Orpheus presented. "You must score above 576. Does that sound acceptable to you?"

While Shroud was content with the conditions overall, he hesitated momentarily when it came to the third requirement. He desired a score that would present a challenge, yet not be excessively high. After careful consideration, he muttered, "Make it 568, and we have a deal."

Orpheus inwardly nodded, pleased to witness the positive changes in his nephew's character. By setting the score at 576, he had tested Shroud's impulsiveness, and Shroud had responded with modesty, adjusting it to a more reasonable level.

"Hmm, very well. However, I have an additional condition: I will personally grade your answers. Is that acceptable?" Orpheus asked, seeking Shroud's agreement.

Aware of Orpheus's integrity and impartiality, Shroud nodded confidently. This was precisely what he had hoped for—a trustworthy and honest evaluator for his exams.

"Alright, now go and study," Orpheus dismissed Shroud, signalling the end of their conversation. Shroud left the office, then went back home to study, something like that.

Back to the present, now that Shroud had won he was contemplating how best to utilize the five-day leave he had just secured.

"Now that I have this five-day coupon, I must ensure I make the most of it," Shroud pondered, contemplating the possibilities. The idea of gambling for quick money crossed his mind, especially with the assistance of [Whispers], but he quickly dismissed it due to his underage status.

Shroud's aim was to accumulate wealth, ensuring he would have enough to satisfy his future desires. After all, they say money can't buy happiness, but poverty can't buy anything at all.

"Hmm, perhaps I could explore the realm of selling information," Shroud considered, his mind alighted with a new concept—an information agency. With the aid of [Whispers] and his sharp intellect, he could delve into investigations, uncovering hidden criminals and becoming a modern-day Sherlock.

"Yes, that seems feasible. I believe I can do that," Shroud concluded, his gaze fixed on the notice board filled with various announcements. He stepped away from the board, his mind already drifting back to the matters at hand. With purposeful strides, he made his way back to his classroom, the bustling school corridors fading into the background.

The remainder of the day unfolded uneventfully, its hours slipping away without any major disruptions. However, just as Shroud was about to gather his belongings and head home, a figure appeared at the doorway. It was Aden, a hesitant voice escaped his lips, carrying an apology meant for Shroud.

Shroud acknowledged Aden's apology and graciously forgave him. However, he felt compelled to address the issue and impart a valuable lesson. Maintaining a firm yet composed demeanour, he advised Aden to show more respect towards his seniors in the future. Aden responded dismissively with a "tch" and abruptly left the room.

As the final bell rang, signalling the end of the school hour, Shroud was prepared to leave like the rest of the students. However, in a moment of impulse, he made a sudden turn, diverting from his usual path. His new destination was the director's office. Discreetly, he navigated his way to the Dean's office.

"I will inform you when the time comes for me to take a leave of absence," he said. Orpheus, in return, nodded in acknowledgement. With that, their meeting concluded, and Shroud retraced his steps back to his home.

Once within the comfort of his own abode, Shroud knew he had work to do. The upcoming days held a purpose, one that required careful preparation. He focused his attention on gathering the necessary materials, laying the groundwork for the inception of his envisioned online information agency.
