The academy trains both demon weapons(humans who can shapeshift into weapons such as swords, guns, spears, etc) and their meinsners(the ones who wield those weapons and power them with energy from their own souls). They use the energy from their souls to cast spells known as demon arts, the spell does require chants but skilled casters can shorten or even compleatly forgo the chant to cast the spell with diminished returns. Shinigamis all have their own unique zanpaktos, that are sentient weapons created by their souls, a shinigami's zampakto is their eternal partner in their extremely long lifes. There are rare shinigamis that can tap into the power of the evil souls ,known as hollows, that they hunt, those shinigamis are known as vizard.
