I Was Invited to a Ball

The next day, we had both forgotten our gloomy attitudes. And, we had also grown closer, for some reason. I smiled at Duke Caspian, not forced at all. He smiled back at me, in the weird creepy- I mean loving way a fiance would to his future wife.

"Ah- my lovely, noble, well-educated wife from a wealthy family," Duke Caspian said. It seemed like he was trying to rub salt in my wounds. Little did he know, I was actually from a noble family. In fact, I was actually the princess! The only precious princess of the royal family. My golden eyes were similar to the queen's, more greenish yellow than the golden color my future husband's eyes were, and I had her hair color, dark black. It was only because of plot convenience that nobody realized until the end of the story.

"Yes, my perfectly sane and kind husband?" I answered, sitting up straight and cutting the smallest crumb out of my breakfast roll, placing the miniscule bit into my mouth. The duke looked astounded by how my fork could even pick up such a crumb.

"I was meaning to ask you, are you really part of the Whitewarth family?" ...what???

"Uhm... maybe?" I started to sweat internally. He frowned.

"But, all the Whitewarths have purple eyes and brown hair." Wait. This "Whitewarth" is a real family?? Also, how awful would that color match be!

"W-wait..." I hesitated. Duke Caspian saw through me.

"So, you were lying after all..." He gave me a sinister grin. He seemed always to be smiling... well except for yesterday, the carriage ride back.

"I-I can explain! I... don't really know what my family name is... so I made it up. I'm sorry..." I tried to use my main character charm on him, but he didn't seem to take it. He did seem to accept my apology, however.

"Hmm... Lady Catherine, are you aware of the ball coming up?" What? I was a little confused. A ball?

Ah- there was a masquerade ball in the story too. In fact, it was one of the major problems. That was where Lady Hawthorn died, and the male lead was the main suspect. Fortunately, they were able to defend him and find out the real culprit, with the help of the royal princes. Then, she had an emotional reunion with her family, and married the Duke.

"Yes! Can I come with you?" I asked, a little too hopefully. Duke Caspian chuckled a little, nodding.

"Sure~ Of course you can come with me~." Then, a more serious look was on his face, but he was still smiling. "We need your dresses prepared instantly. You must give off a strong and imposing aura so nobody looks down on our family."

"Oh... Okay..."

"After all, the masquerade ball is in two days."

"W-What??"
