5 Inside The Basement

"What do you mean we're moving to a brand new facility?" Queried Theo, he was taken aback of what he just heard. Even I couldn't believe the news. I have mixed feelings about it, this building was a staple to every Hellvanian Elite. Our Home and safe haven. Moving would mean no more life threatening facilities and rooms for sure but it would also mean brand new unknown things that can lead to positive changes and negative changes. Leaving this place would also mean leaving it's history and memories.

This building we are currently living on was built a long time ago, this building was Hellviana Mendez's childhood home and was reconstructed into a secret boarding school for us special kids that has extraordinary capabilities. We were dubbed as "Hellvanian Elite", we are scouted children from different countries and from different families placed in this facility to further develop our abilities without the public eye knowing. Each and everyone of us has one thing in common, we all came from wealthy families, or at least financially stable ones; the elite as they call them. From successful business family dynasty, or a family that got rich because their dad sells illegal drugs, as long as your family is rich and you happen to have a talent of bending water or float in the air, you can enter this special school. Once you're enrolled in Hellviana for the Elite and Extraordinaire you are given rules to follow, and breaking these rules can cause serious consequences.

The Primary HEAE Rules are:

Rule #1: Never let anyone know about this school. Revealing the existence of this secret school can cause the public eye and the government to know about us and what we're capable of.

Rule #2: On weekends we can leave the school and head out into the outside world however we must conceal and don't reveal our abilities. Whatever happens to you or your friend/s that you tag along with, will solely be decided to the decision you make when you encounter any kind of trouble. You can also do part-time jobs but only on weekends.

Lastly is Rule #3: Only the school faculty can enter the basement, students are prohibited to enter it. The basement was a mystery to us Hellvanians, no one has ever entered it even the seniors didn't know what's inside the forbidden area. I wished I could ask the Hellvanian graduates but after there graduation. they just disappear. The principal reassured us and that after graduating HEAE you are going to be placed in a town called "Valhalla". Elites that vanishes tried to enter it but somehow they would always gets busted by a teacher or school staff before they could even reach the basement door.

I wonder if these rules will change once we're on the new facility?

A couple of hours later the news about the relocation to the new building was announced by the Principal. We were tasked to pack up our belongings in a suitcase they gave us. We did what we were tasked and embraced the idea that this is our last night here in this crappy but nostalgic building. On the plus side, the school admins wanted us to be fully prepare for the relocation so they all decided that classes after lunch are cancelled and we have the rest of the afternoon to do whatever we want to do. Most people saw this as an opportunity to socialize and bond with their friends but I only saw this as an opportunity to catch up on sleep, for the past few days I have been busy doing school work and physically, mentally, and probably socially prepare for the upcoming "Hellvanian Elite Exams", HEAE's other fancy term for monthly assessment on what we have learn academically and with our progress with our special abilities, so sleep was the last thing on my mind those days.

I was at my room the whole afternoon, trying to sleep but instead I stared at the ceiling all afternoon, contemplating about my life. Hellvanian Elite Exams is coming but I still don't know what is, or probably, are my abilities. I have spent almost a decade finding ways to figuring out what are my specialties but to no avail.

"Maybe my special ability is that I have no ability?" I said to my self.

"That doesn't make sense, why are you in Hellviana for the Elite and Extraordinaire if you're just a simple folk? You just have to figure it out, maybe there's something you haven't tried yet." My inner voice cheered. He was right, HEAE doesn't accept normal people with no extraordinary abilities... right?

"Hey, Zion! You in here." Theo called out outside my room. I got out of my bed to see that it was already mid sunset. Disappointed that I spent my last time here in bed, I groaned at myself and unhappily walk towards the door. I opened the door to find Theo along with Jessie and Octavia.

Then Jessie grabbed my arm. Grinning she said "Great, the gang is all here. Let's go everyone!" she then proceeded to pull me, confused I decided to go with the flow, following my friends into the unknown.

As we continued to walk, I couldn't stop myself to ask, "Where are we going?" Octavia gave me a letter. it read, "Farewell party at the girl's dorm on moon down".

"I didn't get an invitation?" I questioned.

"We tried to but they didn't wanted to invite you, due to you not having any abilities...yet." Informed Octavia who didn't even looked at me. I was devastated by this revelation, I was fine with everyone treating me like I was invisible but not inviting me to a farewell party dedicated to the last time in this school was just superfluous since, technically, I am a Hellvanian Elite just not Extraordinaire yet.

"That's why we're not going." Assured Theo.

Confused as to why they are not attending an epic party, I asked, "Wait really? Why not?"

"Are seriously asking us why we're not attending a party without you? Our sorta brother for the past ten years?" Octavia sarcastic said.

"Yeah, and besides that party would suck without you present." Commented Jessie, she gave me a warm smile reassuring me in the process.

In all honesty, I personally wanted them to attend that stupid farewell party. It sucks to imagine them having a good time without me while I'm in my bedroom probably watching all the fun through my window. I just don't want to be the reason why they didn't attend and enjoyed the first and probably the best farewell party in this school but knowing that they willingly gave up on a chance to attend a jamboree just because I wasn't invited makes my heart warm. I may probably be just an ordinary Elite or a late bloomer but I know that whatever happens ordinary or extraordinary I have them, my support, my family.

As we continue walking on the empty halls, it finally hit me. The direction we're heading to and all that sneaking we did earlier convinced me that we are going to "that place". It can't be. That place was restricted and it was part of the primary HEAE rules. Are we really breaking a primary HEAE rule on the last night here?

Unsure of my assumptions, I asked Theo, "Theo are we heading to-"

"Bout time you guessed it." Theo cuts me as if he was waiting for me to ask.

"Yep you guessed it right. We're finally gonna solve probably the most famous mystery on campus." Jessie chirped. In my utter disbelief, we stopped walking right in front of the basement door.

"We're going to break that annoying third primary HEAE law. We are going inside the forbidden basement."

"I am not going to believe it, we're gonna get caught. We're absolutely gonna get in trouble for this." I ranted, absolutely worried on what lies ahead and the consequences of our rule breaking.

"Oh relax, we saw every single school faculty and staffs in the party. No one will even know we're here." Reassured Octavia. She started to use her special quirk, bending the lock and snapping it in half, she picked it up and bent it back to it's original state. Theo opened the door and we went inside the restricted basement room.

"Jeez can someone turn on the lights, I can't see a anything." Ordered Theo. I squinted my eyes and saw a white switch, I walk carefully not planning on stepping on any of my friends' feet. Successfully making it on the wall where the white switch was located, I flipped it on. Every single one of us hissed like vampires as the lights illuminates the basement room.

"Ah, too bright!" Octavia squealed at the sudden brightness. Covering her eyes using a metal scrap she's controlling to float. A couple of seconds later, our eyes adapted to the bright light caused by the fluorescent light, we finally gonna answer the question "What's hidden inside the basement room."

"Well this sucks. These are all just maintenance supplies down here. " I said in utter disappointment. I was hoping to see interesting stuff like secret weapon stash or a underground teacher's lounge we didn't know about. Just something that's worthy of its title and reputation.

"What in the world am I seeing right now." Jessie suddenly spoke, we looked at her, she was at the red door frame and then we looked at what's inside the now opened red door.

"What the fu-"

Suddenly a loud sirens echoes around the basement room. The lights flickering and turned blood red. We closed the door Jessie opened and ran upstairs. We existed the basement and ran away from it, not forgetting what we just saw inside that red door. It was the reason why it's restricted. It's the reason why the seniors have gone missing suddenly after graduation. It was Valhalla, the hall of slain warriors.
