Chapter 4

-The Next Morning

"Good morning Mom" I greeted before taking my seat, "Good Morning honey, hope you slept well, I understand the Inter-School Competition is in two weeks?" she questioned. "Yeah mom" I said. After breakfast, we left for school. After school, I was having track practice with Yvonne, while Maoris was having a club meeting. When the final bell went off, I went to the changing room and got into my sportswear, Yvonne was already on the tracks waiting for me.

"Hey girl, are you ready?" she said as she sprinted towards me. I simply nodded in reply." Everyone gather round", Coach Miller said and everyone moved to where she was standing, "This year's competition is going to be tougher than last years'". "Martha!" she called out, "you time needs to improve" she said and winked at me. My best time so far, the best in the school was 45.64sec on 400m. Then she blew her whistle and we all took our positions on the starting blocks on the track. We started with jogging, and then timed races. This time I made 43.03secs on 400m and coach was in her words, "impressed because of my enormous improvement" (Note the sarcasm). Time was flying by faster than usual and it was already one week to the Inter-Schools Sports Competition. The sports had track, field and board games. I happened to be participating in two out of the three- track and field and so was Yvonne, Maoris was only participating in the board games. Gill was doing field only. After practice Coach Miller warned us to eat healthy and reduce eating of junk food.

When Maoris and I got home, mom was already home. After taking off my shoes and keeping my backpack, I went to the freezer and took out a bowl of my mom's ice cream and started eating it, I have never adhere to Coach Miller's warnings. "I thought your Coach made it clear not to eat junk" Maoris said standing behind me with her arms crossed over her chest. "Nope, she didn't" I lied. "Stop lying Marty" she said staring at me. "Leave me alone" I said taking another spoon of the chocolate ice cream. "You're lying and I know it" Maoris said still staring at me and taking a spoon from the counter. "What do you think you are doing?" I asked looking down at her hand. "Getting a spoon for myself, duhh, what does it look like" she said trying to scoop some ice cream but I evaded her spoon. "If you don't let me have some ice cream then I will just have to tell Coach Miller that you ate junk food throughout the past few weeks" she said inspecting her nails. "Are you blackmailing me?" I asked giving her a playful glare. "Try me" she said looking up at me, a smirk plastered on her face. "Okay, okay" I said and raised my hands in surrender.

After that, I went to my room and did my homework and then slept for a while.
