Chapter 21

The next day I put the whole mess into the oven at 300 degrees to cook for what I estimated would be an hour and a half or two hours. I was freelancing here, but tried to do some Internet searches to help with this part. The times and temperatures were all over the place, but none was higher than 350 and most were around 300. Good enough for me.

I took the green bean casserole out of the oven when a weird, unappetizing smell and a brownish haze invaded the house.

The casserole in its recently purchased festive dish wasn’t very pretty, but it wasn’t totally burnt. Besides, this holiday was all about sharing. I had something to contribute. I couldn’t sample it because that would mess it up, so I hauled it over to Rick’s.

His mother greeted me with an accusing glare. “What the fuck is that? It smells awful. Are you trying to ruin Thanksgiving? You and your disaster aren’t welcome.”
