Charlie sniffed at my reply and turned his head away.

“But you’re right. He just came over to rub it in. Tell me that everyone’s talking about me and Rick. I don’t know. Do you think maybe he was making a backhanded homophobic slur?”

Charlie gave me a sour look, but shook his head. I nodded in agreement. Bruno definitely hadn’t sounded like he was spitting on two guys dating. He was just laughing at our public humiliation. Our public embarrassment. It didn’t matter that we weren’t at fault.

Not to him or any of the others who stopped by to talk or merely strolled past and smiled. Some looked and sounded sympathetic. Some not at all.
